The second book in the internationally-bestselling series that includes The Breadwinner, Mud City and My Name Is Parvana In 2001, a war is raging in Afghanistan as a coalition of Western forces tries to oust the Taliban by bombing the country. Parvana’s father has died, and her mother, sister and brother have gone to a faraway wedding, not knowing what has happened to the father. Parvana doesn’t know where they are. She just knows she has to find them. She sets out alone, masquerading as a boy, her journey becoming more perilous as the bombs begin to fall. Making her way across the desolate Afghan countryside, she meets other children who are strays from the war ― an infant boy in a bombed-out village, a nine-year-old girl who believes she has magical powers over land mines, and a boy with one leg who is so obnoxious that Parvana can hardly stand him. The children travel together because it is easier than being alone. And, as they forge their own family in the war zone that Afghanistan has become, their resilience, imagination and luck help them to survive. The reissue includes a new cover and map, an updated author’s note and a glossary to provide young readers with background and context. All royalties from the sale of this book will go to Right to Learn Afghanistan. Review: A Powerful Story That Opened Up Important Conversations - I read this book with my 9-year-old brother, and I was so impressed by how it captivated him. The story of Parvana's journey is both heartbreaking and inspiring. It was amazing to see how interested he was in her survival, but more than that, it was deeply educational. It opened his eyes to a part of the world and a way of life he knew nothing about, leading to so many thoughtful questions. In the end, he absolutely loved Parvana's courage and is already asking for the next book in the series. A truly important read. Review: Grandkids love this series - Grandkids love this series

extremely sad
This one tore my heart out. It was so sad. The main character lives on, though, and I am hooked on this story so I’m off to read the next book.

The Year 7 Experience
I purchased this as I am teaching it in a Year 7 class this year. Through the iPad I can prepare notes to use in class and project the text onto the board to share the experience. This assists me to engage students and helps me trigger text analysis with electronic preparation. The novel itself is excellent. The character journey accompanied by the physical is a favourite of mine and Ellis does it well. The confusion and disjoint with reality experienced by the characters is palpable. The writing is a little simplistic and given the younger audience this can be effective. The themes and challenges presented in the text are what I really look forward to working with my class on. Ellis presents an horrific situation with compassion and understanding and asks us as readers to do the same. Given current global politics, this novel is still as pertinent today as when first written.

Everyone should read this book. Quick easy read.
I'm a teacher who assigns this book to my students to read. The school doesn't provide the books so I buy them myself for my students. I like the used books for a better value. Fantastic book. Kids like the story and it is a great way to start a discussion about culture, freedoms, rights, values and how lucky Americans are. Good historical background on the Taliban. Make sure you also get the next three books in the series.

Topbook for children
My daughter adores this book. She is very familiar with the writer. Again she loves the story and is very intrigued by a different world. She has been asking many questions about the subject. Since day one she is hooked to this writer and her books. Very smooth writing for a mature 10 year old.
