my daughter as a project to do for school . can we put the planet in a shoebox would it work ?

When all put together it is much bigger than a shoe box. My daughter did hers for school also, we put it in a medium size moving box for carrying it in.

What are total # of pieces? Does it include the sun? I can't tell

Yes it includes the sun. Its around 31 pieces altogether. Each planet is in 2 pieces, there are individual hangers and then the cross bar to hang them from. I bought it for my 5 and 7 year old they did a really good job.

Does it include Pluto?

No Pluto was not included. ..hope this helps
