Embossing was deeper and cut out areas released out of the dies that I thought were solid areas. You have to boys the black Impressions Pad as they work in tandem. I do not know why they aren't sold as a set. Highly recommend this product. Review: Believe It or Not, It Works For Other Things Too! - So I know this is a tool for a paper cutter, but I had no intention of using it for crafting. All I did was search for "Plastic Mat" among other things to find this was one of the few things I found available for my purpose. I needed something to set things on top of to serve as a buffer between my glossy computer case. I found sticky mats, and mouse pads, but neither of those were appropriately sized or fit my needs exactly. This did. It looks good, it's sturdy, and with some rubber feet of the bottom it doesn't slide around or scratch my glossy case.
