Braun MultiServe Coffee Machine 7 Programmable Brew Sizes / 3 Strengths + Iced Coffee & Hot Water for Tea, Glass Carafe (10-Cup), Stainless Steel, KF9170SI

I purchased this item as a "damaged, but still working item" from Amazon. I'm not sure what the "damage " was supposed to be, since the item was in perfect shape, never used, and no scratches. Reduced price lowered the price to what I think the price point should be in the retail market when comparing this model to other brands. Strictly my opinion and I'm no marketing expert or price level analytic reviewer, either. Since January 2020 when I purchased this coffeemaker, I've noticed few things about it different than how described in its manual. First, no matter how much water above the line of 10 cup marking in the water feed container, the machine brews 9 cups as marked on the coffee carafe. That seems a bit odd to me, however, having used all 3 variations of brewing (light, gold, bold) to see if it was a particular brew strength that limited the amount, I consistently ended up with 9 cups in the carafe. 10 cupCOMMENTS: I finally figured out why only 9 cups in carafe: the machine only brews a maximum of 9 cups regardless of how much water is in the clear water container. To get 10 cups,leave water container on machine, I fill coffee carafe to the bottom edge of the black top of the carafe and then fill the water container. Pouring from carafe fills the water container right up to the top. No way I’d be able to remove container, fill it so full and not spill it while placing back on machine. It would be nice if this was explained in the manual. However, even with water container filled to the top, the only way I've found to brew 10 cups of coffee is in two stages; first dial the brew all the way clockwise to the full carafe image. Run the brew cycle. When finished, the carafe will be at the 9 cup line and water still in the clear container on top of the machine. Turn the power button off on the machine, turn the brew dial all the way counterclockwise to 5oz cup, turn on the machine again and brew the 5 ounces with the same fresh grounds that were just used for 9 cup yield. Since I'm brewing immediately, there isn't any flavor effect that I've noticed, just a full carafe of coffee. Not the most ideal of brewing scenarios, however, the coffee carafe is now full 10 cups. Perhaps in a future model Braun will ensure that the original brewing cycle brews 10 cups as marked on the carafe. Makes no sense to me to sell a coffee maker with a 10 cup carafe and then have the maximum brew cycle brew only 9 cups. Second, the manual itself is actually labeled for 5 different models. Apparently there is a travel cup that is included with some of the models and not with others. It would have been helpful to know from the manual which models included the travel cup and which didn't. This model didn't include the cup, however, the pictures on the box and lack of complete description in the manual left me thinking there was supposed to be a travel cup included in the box. A call to Braun customer service earned me a call back and an apology that the manual wording wasn't more clear and for my troubles they sent would send me 1 free travel cup. Two weeks later said travel cup arrived. Works great with the coffeemaker and kept coffee hot for the 1 hour I drove around town running errands. I suggested to Braun that they identify in the manual which models included the cup in order to avoid future confusion and false expectations. That's the sum total of differences I've noticed from description to actual use. In another review a user made note of the fixed lid, opening too small for a hand, and difficulty cleaning the carafe. For me, not an issue. Particularly because the pour spout doesn't drip down the side of the carafe when pouring a cup of coffee as happened regularly with my Kitchen Aid flip-top wide open carafe. I've found rinsing the carafe with warm water, swirling it around gets most of the residue off the glass sides. A decanter brush, by GKBrush washing brush ( I bought mine right here on Amazon) and Dawn liquid dish soap removed the rest of residue. For me not a big deal in the grand scheme of things in my life. In other reviews people made negative comments regarding the temperature of the coffee. Personally, I like to be able to drink my coffee hot enough to be hot, yet not hot enough to scald my tongue on first taste. If you're like me, you'll enjoy this coffee temperature as brewed, just the right temperature to enjoy. If you like scalding, you'll need to place your coffee cup in a microwave oven and boil the hell out of the coffee.... no thanks. Also in other reviews some people were annoyed that the coffee warmer had a set time limit (remaining time visibly displayed, too) and functioned in an automatic mode with no manual override to keep warmer on past original timed amount. Me, I like the fact there's an automatic shut-off to the warmer plate. Cheaper coffee makers I've owned in the past kept that warmer plate as long as the power was on and tended to distill down the coffee over the day to almost non-drinkable. I'm not so much of a coffee snob that I'm above warming up a cup of today's coffee in the microwave oven for 45-50 seconds to have the coffee warm as I like it again. I'll take manual warming over constant distillation, thank you. As to brewing strength and flavor of the brewed coffee, for me I prefer what's labeled as "Gold". I presume after all the fancy wording this is a regular strength brew at temperature just right. Works for me. I use two brands of coffee: Death Wish Coffee original beans and Maui Grown Coffee Peaberry beans. Both are purchased as whole beans and fresh ground in my Braun coffee grinder when making coffee. Maui Grown Peaberry comes from Maui Grown Company Store here on Maui in Lahaina, HI over on Lahainaluna Road. Death Wish Coffee is a strong coffee sold online direct from them and also in some local stores. Peaberry is a mild roast with milder flavor. Death Wish is an in your face strong coffee without tasting burnt. Both brew exactly as I like the taste of them to be in this Braun coffeemaker. Some reviewers complained about the power button being too close to the on/off switch. Really??? The buttons are two very different shapes and CLEARLY labeled. Perhaps the negative reviewers have fat fingers??? Hint: power switch is the bottom of the switches. Bottom line for me: excellent coffeemaker at proper price packed with all the features I was looking for to replace the prior maker I had which lost its LED lights over time.

Update since contacting the seller on Amazon: As expected, we were told the item was not covered since it was past the 90-day warranty. When I responded that it seemed like a piece of technologically complex equipment with such a high retail price should have a warranty that extends considerably longer--and should not stop working after less than a year--the seller responded that "you may request for manufacture warranty but we cannot guarantee its approval since this item was sold in 'used-like new' condition." This WAS very surprising, because nowhere on the page when we purchased this item did it indicate that. I assumed we were purchasing a new item. No wonder it broke; who knows how long it had been previously used! This seems like a rather deceptive practice. We were pretty excited about this coffee maker when we first got it. I was especially excited, because my husband wakes up earlier than me, and although he's not a huge fan of technology or of coffee, this machine was easy enough to use that I would wake up to him having made me a fresh-brewed pot every morning. Then, a couple months after purchase, some parts of the digital display stopped working properly. It was hard to tell the time or to program the automatic start, but we didn't use that feature often, and it still made coffee fine so we didn't worry too much about it. But about 9-10 months into owning it, it started occasionally stopping during the brewing cycle and giving us error codes. We could mostly get it to restart by some combination of cleaning parts, unplugging the machine, running the clean/descale cycle--but about a week ago that stopped working too, and it now seems to have fully given up the ghost no matter what we do. Either gives an error code or only uses like a third of the water and then says it's done. (The error codes we've gotten seem to include E21, E02 and E04, but it is hard to tell because again the digital display does not function properly...) Now I am back to making my own coffee on my old reliable French press. We have contacted Braun but based on other reviews, I'm not expecting much.

Update 01/18/2025): while I am still loving this machine, when you make a half pot of coffee, it only makes 4 cups (see picture). This is a 10 pot machine so should definitely make at least 5 cups. There is more than enough water in the tank. Anyone else have this issue? Original review: For years I’ve used a French press but I wanted the convenience of making just one cup at a time when needed. I read countless reviews here & independent sites. I originally bought another machine but was very disappointed because it didn’t really make just one cup & used all the water in the tank regardless of what cup setting you chose. Back it went. Last week I bought this Braun model & I have been loving it. First, very nice design with easy to use interface. Second, you can really make just one cup. You can also brew a half pot which is a great feature. I also like the glass carafe so you can see how much coffee is left but I would have preferred a thermal carafe. The coffee quality is very good (I am self-admittedly a coffee snob & proud of it!). I’ve always had a grinder to grind my own beans & did not want a K-cup machine which IMHO makes terrible coffee. So far, so good! Will update if things change.

Update: 17 months after purchase the machine stopped working with a error "EO4" on the screen. Called Braun and they said it's a faulty circuit. Braun sent us a brand new replacement no charge. Inconvenient to not have a coffee makee over the holidays, but cant beat that customer service. Made it to the first cleaning cycle and decided to write a review. It's been about 5 months and this machine makes good coffee, yes the drip stop isn't perfect, yes it doesn't make exactly 10 cups of coffee, otherwise I haven't had the issues others mention in their reviews. I brew using paper filters for cleaning ease and have had no clogging or overflow issues. Two things prevent this machine from being 5 star: on the clock display one of the lines that make the numbers doesn't work anymore. When it shows a 6 it looks like a 5. So issues with the display. Lastly the designers should add a wheel option to the bottom so you can easily slide this out from under cabinets on the counter top. My cabinets are so low that I can't refill the water when it is tucked back, it's an awkward drag out every morning. Easy to clean, descale and replace the water filter. I appreciate the filtered water and the hot water option is so convenient. The timer option is pretty fantastic when you want to come downstairs in the morning to already brewed coffee, and i tried the cold brew option once and it worked perfectly. Despite the clock issue I'm hoping to maintain and use this machine for years to come.

Recommend: sadly NO Capacity: only 9 cups of coffee, not 10 Ease: very easy to use: minor time consumption to clean and descale. Temp: use GOLD setting, it's the closest to correct temp. Value: with our experience, it's been a disappointment Performance: hot water on unit #1 (great, albeit more involved than our heat kettle), on #2 (Äbyssmal!), coffee on both units (ok with no scorching, but never 10 cups). UPDATE 1 (9/2023): TBH, on the hunt for a different brand now. Saga continues, heat plate on original brewer delaminated so bad it rusted. Braun Customer Svc, other than being troublesome to get ahold of a real person, were kind and DID agree to send a replacement #2. It arrived DOA! Error codes and beeps, no buttons work. Days later able to get CS again and they send replacement #3. First thing noticed on #3 was lcd/clock was malfunctioning, nothing black electrical tape cant cover. However, it has been brewing (still) 9 cups of coffee and the heat plate shows no sign of its coating delamination thus far. The hot water dispenser on #3 works at times, so it's still not working as advertised. Very disappointed because our previous Braun simple brewer was a work horse. Just proving that newer things are seldom better and made to obsolete way too soon. **And, coffee pots #2 and #3 DO NOT seem to have the handle convention drip issue that the original #1 had. ORIG: After about 6 months of use, here is our review and feedback. Likes: makes good coffee as advertised; good and steady heat; the hot water feature is nice especially if counter space limited but hot water kettles can be less hassle; relatively easy to clean (but time consuming and not fully automatic). Dislikes: WON'T BREW 10 CUPS OF COFFEE - EVER! It will pull 10 cups of water but doesn't account for coffee/filter absorption. The only time we've put 10 cups of water in and got 10 cups out - CLEANING CYCLE! We've tried alternate grind sizes, various coffee volumes and made some horrific coffee along the way with perfectly great fresh ground beans. Adding more water to reservoir - useless. Disappointed with the false advertising of being a 10 cup brewer. 10 cup cleaning cycle, yep. 10 cup water heater, mostly. 8 cup coffee maker, yep (you may get 9 cups of coffee if you wait 10-15 minutes as the water slowly drains from the grounds basket. (BTW, using paper or gold perm filter doesn't make difference either! Hint: we use unbleached #4 cone filters for best taste). Also, no way to keep coffee at temperature beyond non-overrideable approx. 1 hour heat plate auto-shutoff. And finally, be sure to place a napkin or absorbent material under the pot handle - yep you read that right - engineering did not account for steam evaporating on the pot lid and way too easily condensing into the handle only to drip out the bottom of it onto the counter. As this was our "upgrade" purchase to replace our 20+ y.o. worn-out Braun simple coffee maker, this purchase has been a disappointment, almost to the point I want to McGyver or repair the old one. Even having researched various models for months before deciding on this one, we never saw anything like these issues reported for this model.

We wanted to get rid of the dual keurig because the pods are just too expensive and it made a terrible pot of coffee. After a lot of looking, we settled on this one. I was a little worried due to the reviews, but luckily we did not experience the angst others have mentioned. It's a beautiful machine and it was very easy and fast to set up. The temperature and gold setting are actually perfect for a delicious cup/pot of coffee! I know it sounds a little coffee-snobby, but temperature can make or break a fantastic cup. We use paper filters, so no issue with the reusable yet. The machine is quite tall so in order to fill the water tank and ground filter, it needs to be moved out from under the cabinet. This was constantly mentioned in reviews so I just planned ahead and bought a tray to put the appliance on that easily and stably slides the machine back and forth with no issue. Making a pot does yield all 10 cups. The only issue is figuring out which setting fills which cup size. On the keurig, the 12oz setting filled a coffee cup to the top, but for some reason this did not so we just use the next setting up. Overall, we love the machine and the coffee it produces is delicious.

UPDATE #2: Thinking that perhaps the Afresh cleaning tablets weren’t up to the job, I ran an entire gallon of vinegar through the machine. Between the actual vinegar, and then the tanks of clean water to get all the vinegar cleared out, this took the better part of the day. But it worked (sort of) - I had great coffee once again.... For two days. Then it started getting progressively more watery. I’m fairly certain that what’s happening is, like a clogged shower head, the individual jets of water are no longer spraying straight down - some are shooting off to the side, bypassing the coffee completely. (I think this also accounts for why it’s brewing a whole mug of coffee in under 30 seconds). My husband wants to take the whole thing apart and mess with it. I require all devices that I encounter daily, pre-caffeine, to just work, so I’ve already replaced this with a no-bells-and-whistles $30 standard drip coffeemaker, and husband can have the Braun as his overpriced little project. UPDATE: It’s been a year and a half since I purchased this coffee maker and I am not happy. It has become wildly inconsistent. Doing the exact same thing each morning gives me a different cup of coffee every day. Everything from the dreaded “lightly coffee flavored water”, to bitter and undrinkable, and everything in between. Using the “bold” setting has remedied the “coffee water” issue, but I still get anything from “ok” to “undrinkable” while making no changes to my process at all. With the caveat that I’m writing this after owning the machine for three days (I’ll edit later if necessary), I really like it. When my 9-yr-old Keurig died, I wanted to replace it with something more environmentally responsible. And while I’m the only one in my house who drinks coffee, when my parents visit, they want a whole carafe full. So this is the best of both worlds. I haven’t made a full carafe yet, but I’ve made single cups and have some thoughts.... The directions say to use three small scoops of coffee (a large and small scooper is provided) for a 12oz cup of coffee. No. No no no no no. That was the most bitter cup of coffee I’d ever tasted. I cut it back to 2, and with some creamer and a little sugar, it was fine. I cut it back to 1.5 scoops and didn’t need the sugar. A lot of reviews mention the height of the machine, and it is pretty big. It fits under my cabinets, but there’s not enough clearance to open the compartment where the filter goes and lift the filter out. To solve this problem, I put felt sliders over the rubber feet on the bottom of the machine. Now it’s simple to slide it out to deal with the filter, and then push it back. I really wish the little accents weren’t bright green. I can’t imagine that color really goes with anyone’s kitchen. Surely not mine. I’ve seen complaints about the operation of the machine but it’s pretty straight forward. The clock stays on all the time, so no problem there. You just choose your brew size, hit the “power” button which lights up all the other brew options, chose Light, Gold, or Bold, and you’re done. It’ll just start doing it’s thing automatically. After it’s done it “powers off” (the clock is still on, but accidentally bumping a button isn’t going to start a pot of coffee brewing) The water tank isn’t huge, but that was a selling point for me. Keurig’s water tank is gross! Who wants to brew coffee with three-day old water, in a tank covered in biofilm?! With this I just put in approximately as much as I need, and later dump out any extra and let the tank dry. I did see advertised that this machine has a “filter.” It’s just a tiny little thing to remove chlorine. Rather than remembering to replace that, I’ll just use filtered water to fill the reservoir. The gold-tone coffee mesh coffee filter is perfectly fine. I don’t know why you’d choose to use a paper filter in this machine, but the instructions say you can. One last thing to note - the first part of the serial number of this particular model is KF917. Most of the models on the market are KF907. The “1” indicates that this version has a separate dispenser for hot water. It’s right beside where the coffee comes out, so it’s hard to tell the difference between the two machines. Make sure you know what you’re buying. I’m writing this the weekend after thanksgiving when the 907s are significantly cheaper than the 917. But, that water dispenser was a major selling point for me. If it’s not for you, save yourself some cash and look at the other model. So to summarize, if you are looking specifically for a no-Kcup drop machine that will do multiple single-cups sizes, AND a carafe; and a machine that has a separate water dispenser; and you’re not bothered by the height and can play around with the amount of grounds required, I highly recommend this coffee maker.

If you like good fresh brewed coffee Braun is a good choice. I've been using this multi-serve model for over three years and the coffee still tastes great. I add a non-bleached #2 paper filter inside the basket filter for easy clean-out, and normally use the Gold setting. An entire pot is brewed in a couple minutes, but easy to "cheat the pot" with the shut-off lever, or using the cups/thermos setting tastes just as great on the "gold" setting. The shut-off lever allows a few drips, which probably helped the non-stick warming plate begin to lose its coating Almost every coffee maker I've had does the same thing (maybe a version with a thermal carafe and no warmer plate would last even longer). I have used the hot water feature only a couple times, because it has a coffee flavor. Monthly cleaner reminder works, just follow the instructions. If you do not clean it regularly you'll get calcium build-up, and an error code. Not fun early in the morning when it won't make coffee. Great coffee maker overall.

I can't speak much to the quality of the product, as I only had it a few days. But top marks for their customer relations. I had an issue with the reservoir valve not springing back into place, I reached out to the company. I suggested a replacement reservoir, but since it's on warranty they said they'd replace the entire unit. I had to cut the electrical cord and send them a photo, and they are sending the replacement. The cut cord made the unit unuseable, making it unnecessary to ship back. And then when I couldn't recall the warranty details, they responded to my e-mailed question within hours.

I really like the design setup of both the coffee basket and the water reservoir. I no longer have coffee grinds in my water when in my sleepy mode I spill too much ground coffee in the morning. I don’t have an issue with the on switch but I have concerns re the machine not shutting off. The machine makes great coffee and when you have people in the house with different schedules it is great to be able to make one mug at a time.
