Nowhere-man Ronny Miller is secretly in love with Cindy Mancini, the prettiest, most popular girl on campus. When Cindy finds herself in a desperate predicament, Ronny steps in to save the day ... for a price! Cindy must pose as Ronny's girl so that her popularity might rub off on him. But the road to popularity takes an unexpected twist when Ronny becomes so "cool" that his former friends feel the chill, Cindy is left toally out in the cold, and Ronny himself discovers that money might buy you popularity, but it can't buy you love! Review: Funny movie about love and popularity - I loved watching this movie, good what if scenario about popularity in school if you could change it and what might happen if you did. A funny movie. Review: Cheese, anyone? - It gets stupider and stupider as time passes and it is kind of cringe worthy. This movie is about a school reject who has strong work ethics and who has saved his hard earned money to buy himself a telescope from mowing lawns. Then his pretty high school crush spills wine on her mother's borrowed suede dress at a party and is in a panic to buy a new one. She doesn't have the cash, therefore, it's a coincidence that the reject Ronald is at the mall at the exact same time as she is and sees her predicament and offers a sweet deal of buying her the dress, if she agrees in exchange, that he can ride on her coattails to popularity, of course, leaving his other nerdy friends in the dust who start to resent him. Cliche and predictable and over acted emotion. The dad and mom of Ronald are sickening leave it to beaver types and Seth Green as the younger brother only typecasts himself for the obnoxious characters he plays on later roles. Patrick Dempsey himself as the main character is too good looking to be a nerd and it's too easy of a transition for him to suddenly turn hot and easy on the eyes and the cheerleader sidekicks look like thirty year old women instead of high school girls. However, it's a movie that I can sit down and watch and since there aren't many anymore like that, I give it five stars. It's clean, teen angst, eighties cheese, but it's an enjoyable movie.

Great 1980s movie. Worth the cost.
I love this 1980s movie. I love that it was filmed in Arizona. It’s a funny movie. I just couldn’t find it anywhere streaming. I’d rather watch a movie with no interruption. It’s worth the money.

Found it after many years.
The only scene I remember from this movie is during the school dance and the Anteater Ritual dance. I was finally able to find it after many years. I had to use AI of all things. Classic movie!

Fun blast from the past
This is a bit of a guilty pleasure movie for me. Having been a nerd in high school, although nerds in my school weren't considered quite so on the fringes, I could relate to Ronald's wish to be popular. If you don't already know this movie, Ronald (an adorably young Patrick Dempsey) pays the most popular girl in school $1,000 to pretend to go out with him for a month. She's skeptical, but true to his prediction, the "in" crowd immediately decides he must be OK and they take him into their fold. But when the secret gets out, he becomes more of a social pariah than ever. The only things in this movie I don't like are 1) some fart humor that just isn't that funny, and 2) the inevitable slow clap started by one person that spreads through the crowd. What a tired cliche, although I admit that the speech that inspired the slow clap was good. What I really like about this movie: 1) the funny scene with the African anteater ritual dance; 2) Patrick Dempsey's appeal; 3) the chemistry between him and Amanda Peterson (who plays Cindy); 3) a VERY young Seth Green as the obnoxious younger brother; and 4) the overall message (even though it's a little heavy-handed). I like to revisit this movie every couple of years. I always enjoy it.

R.I.P. Amanda Peterson....... :-( Auf YouTube gibt es ein wundervolles Tribute für Amanda Peterson, auch mit den Highlights dieses Films = "Amanda Peterson Tribute High Definition" von John Stone !

" My name is Ronald, not Donald..."
A film that could have easily been plucked straight from the John Hughes teen film catalogue, this likeable & lovable film was a box office success back in 1987, and it's not hard to see why. Patrick Dempsey stars as Ronald, a high school nerd about to enter his senior year, who yearns to be one of the " cool kids." Cindy Mancini (Amanda Peterson) is a beautiful cheerleader, and is not only one of the most popular girls in school, but also the secret object of his affection. One night at a party, Cindy ruins an expensive outfit ( which actually belongs to her mother - white suede? How 80's can you get! ) , and Ronald offers the $1,000 needed to replace it, but only if she will pretend to date him for one month in order to make him " popular ". Although somewhat skeptical about Ronald's plan, Cindy agrees, and her new " boyfriend " turns out to be right about what he thinks dating Cindy will do for him -- as he soon becomes one of the most likeable ( & desirable ) guys in school, all thanks to his association with Cindy. However, Ronald will find out that the price of his all new popularity may be a great deal higher than he could have ever anticipated. I absolutely adore this film, it's up there with Pretty in Pink & Some Kind of Wonderful as one of my all time favourite 80's teen films. Boasting great performances & a great soundtrack, this much underrated 80's teen comedy is an essential purchase for anyone who likes their 80's teen comedies sweet, frothy and fun.
