**Q: Can you use these to add foil to canvas? Or do they only work on smooth surfaces (paper etc)?**
A: I'm sure it could be used on canvas, but it would not be smooth unbroken lines.

**Q: Do i need a cricut machine to use the pens? do all 3 pens have usb connectors?**
A: No you do not.  These are freestyle.  While they do still need an USB port.  So the heat for the transfer can be generated.

**Q: Can they be used for silhouette cameo 4?**
A: Yes, there's a tutorial using the silhouette with these on youtube

**Q: Are these the ones I can use with my cricut ?**
A: No--These are the freestyle ones to be used by hand.  I believe what you are looking for are the Memory Keepers Starter Kit.  Be sure to read that description to make sure it is compatible with the Cricut.
