Review: Easy to understand. - Good workbook with great illustrations and easy to comprehend. Review: Good techniques - I got this gift for my husband who has taken up Carving. He has been practicing the techniques taught in this book and I'm really impressed by how great they look. The book looks like it has sufficent images and instructions. For both the readers and visual learner. My husband showed my grandfather (who is an avid Whittler) and my grandfather told my husband he needed to come over and teach him how to do faces. It's a great book, even if you aren't really doing spirit face type carvings it's great techniques to have.

Excellent source for learning to carve facial features.
I received this book today and took a good long look at it. I believe it to be a very useful, helpful book. Not only does Mr. Enlow cover the basic elements of face carving, he also includes several fully carved, detailed faces that I found very helpful and will adapt to some of my own carvings. I gave this book 4 stars because I felt the photos could have been better and maybe showed the particular point in the carving from different views. Other than that, I highly recommend this book for beginning and intermediate carvers. I disagree with the two people who gave it only two stars. One person said you can't learn to carve from a book and should find other carvers to help you learn. While I agree you can't just read a book a learn to carve and must take knife and wood in hand and go at it yourself and certainly, if you can be around other carvers you will definitely learn more and progress at a faster rate, using a book as a starting point can be very effective. I know there are different learning styles among different people and some do not learn well from books, not because of lack of intelligence or literateness, but just because they have a different learning style. The other person just said don't buy it without any reason given. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I've enjoyed Mr. Enlow's carvings and books for a long time. Caricature carving is my primary focus. If the nose is a little crooked you can always say, "Well, sure it's crooked. It's a caricature!" LOL

Thorough and thought out
I love this book it shows step by step how to carve eyes, lips etc. very helpful before you try though be sure to practice with your tools and make sure they are sharp. I have some cheaper tools as we could not afford the better ones yet and they are so hard to work with that I ended up following their techniques but did it all with a knife. Meaning its better to get good tools but either way learn to sharpen them.

Bought as a gift for my Brother
This book is fantastic. I've only ever made a spoon, but my brother is an impressive whittler. He was very happy to receive this book for his birthday!

Good tutorial for carvers wanting to branch off from their main carving projects and try their hand at wood spirit/caricature type fun carving. There's alot of great info within it's pages and as usual these "Masters" make it look sooo easy! Practice-practice-practice! My only negative impression is not knowing what type of wood he uses. I would think bass wood but I can't seem to ever get the fine details in bass wood with out it chipping off. What ever he uses, he cuts through it like soft butter! Definitely a good book to have in your arsenal.

Better info. available in videos on the internet.
Not as step by step as I had hoped. The internet has much better video options to learn these techniques and I recommend that before purchasing this 'book.' Save your money for a good carving knife and watch multiple videos instead of buying this book like I did. It's already in the Goodwill bin...

Utilissimo!
Senza tanti giri di parole (anche perché è in inglese e valuto più le foto istintivamente), insegna a realizzare le parti del viso e visi completi … che è quel che più mi interessa. Ben fatto!

Absolutely great for anyone wanting a structured and no-nonsense guide to facial ferature carving. Within minutes following this guide I had much higher quality face parts carved, than ever before. A great guide, however it is not in-depth, it does assume the person has familiarity with carving in general, and of course a full set of tools. This isn't an in-depth how-to guide, however it has been EXTREMELY beneficial and pleasing, I heartily recommend it, you will be carving faces in no time! Kindle edition renders beautifully, absolutely no problem :)
