Will this work with my 1/2" double braided polyester arborist rigging rope? will it damage my rope?

That kind of rope might slip in the puller when put under a load. Your best choice would be a 3 strand twisted rope like a polypro combination.

How well does it release tension? I need to be able to bring it to high tension then back that tension out.

Well it can release tension just not very well. I can do it but it requires lots of fingers and two hands. I pulled up 4/0 aluminum wire mid span and spliced it back together. Needless to say it has its limitations. They could improve it in the payout part of the tool. But still a very handy tool in certain situations.

The box it came in said "made in the u.s.a."

Should I buy puller with rope or buy without rope and buy better rope?

I found that "better rope" was expensive when I ended up at a local Marine/Boat supply chain and paid more for the rope than the puller-rope combo. Since my puller didn't come with rope, I don't know what the rope is they supply, my marine rope is very good, more expensive but probably more than I needed using the puller as a hand winch for my Ural sidecar rig.
