Indirect. I was able to get Windows 10 to see the adapter, but because I had the wrong type of adapter it couldn't see the SSD that was mounted in it. This adapter does not work with nvme drives.

Never mind it's supposed to be backward compatible. Mine works fine on win 10 using usb 3.0

I put it (with an ssd from my laptop) in a chromebook. not recognized, yet then chrome os is "damaged." why would this do anything to an os?

Not sure what you are really asking for. Should not damage the OS at all. If the drive is good then you should be able to see it on a windows laptop. If you still have issues get a copy of hiren boot cd, medicat or something simmilar and boot up from usb. Then you can navigate to see the contents of the drive
