PortaPow Pure USB Data Blocker

... its so tiny that if you are an idiot at the airport and forget you are using it and unplug without care yep you've left it behind. Just ordered another one.

These days you have to take all and any practical steps to avoid the hackers. This little USB dongle sits between your device, it's chager cable and any public USB charge port. It blocks out any data transfer, to the only thing you get is the juice to charge and power your phone/tablet/laptop. Have seen USB ports on many buses, trains, cafes and airplanes and they all can be a security risk for data cpature or injection. The only enhancement would be to make it very bright e.g. flouresent yellow or orange, so that it isn't ever lost or left behind as it's a small little item.

I wish I had not bought this one though. This one has no technology to allow fast charging of any kind. It will serve the purpose of blocking data but the red ones allow faster charging on some devices. Unfortunately the red one I ordered came damaged and I had to get a refund and order another one which is going to take half way through next week to arrive :( But all in all these products are all good and work like a charm. You just have to be careful to get the one you want. This is the most basic and most blatantly provably secure model. But I already trust the company and I want maximum charging speed, so... I am buying the red one.

This blocker is pretty great, I've not bought others but took a look at a fair few before settling on this. The best bit about it is the male USB-A port literally has a custom connector with no data pads at all, and only the power pads. Other blockers seem to use a standard USB-A connector and just don't connect it to the other end, but if you were super paranoid then that wouldn't be good enough - but this one with no data pads and a clear case that lets you see the PCB traces makes me pretty certain this blocker does what it claims to be doing properly. Through the case you can see the other end's female USB-A socket has the data pins tied together, which is an additional protection *though* it may cause charging/power issues in a few rare cases if a cable needs to be 'clever' and detect that it's been plugged in using the data pins (from memory, Apple's Lightning cables may do this, though I checked and my iPhone was happy to charge through the blocker). Traces on the PCB look thick-enough that you're not going to have any power issues caused by the blocker. The clear plastic case feels pretty sturdy and not cheap/likely to break.

Not only does this protect your kit from malicious attacks from compromised USB ports, but it can also allow you to charge (for example) your phone from more ports. My old work laptop would reject my phone and refuse to charge it, because it thought it was a USB drive. Using the data blocker prevents this, and allowed me to charge my phone from the laptop. Buy one and chuck it in your tech kit today!

If you travel and charge you need one of these or one of the other varients of this unit. Now that USb charge sockets are common in hotels, you have no idea what could lie behind them. Well worth the money.
