Nice panniers, always room for improvement though

Some missing details from Amazon's description:Volume (pair): 2200ci/36l (unexpanded), 2600ci/42l (expanded)Weight: 52.8oz/1.5kgDimensions: 13.5 x 10.5 x 5in, 34 x 27 x 13cm (unexpanded), 13.5 x 10.5 x 9in, 34 x 27 x 23cm (expanded)Material: Dupont Cordura®One outer pocket has mesh borders on both sides and bottom. Other colors available: red, avocado, and navy/grey.I use these on the rear rack of my mountain bike and have taken them camping. I normally leave them on the bike and they see a mix of road and off-road use, and this winter I've been using them on very rutted and muddy trails and they're taking a beating but holding up well. Except for the mesh which tore from a plastic trowel stored in it. The trowel is not sharp, but it tipped sideways and stretched the mesh until it cut a slit. After I initially installed them, I found that the hook/retention system didn't work well for off-road use and the panniers swayed and bounced excessively. I do not have suspension and the panniers were crashing against the rack supports with every hit. My rack has horizontal slots for the hooks to attach to. I ended up adding a 1"W x 48"L vertical compression strap to each pannier running from the top side bars of the rack, down across the front of the pannier, and through the slot at the bottom. This eliminated all the sway and bouncing although it makes it a little harder to get things in and out of the pannier as I have to loosen the strap first and re-cinch after zipping up. The panniers have a horizontal compression strap inside the main compartment, but it does little compared to the vertical strap that I added to the outside.Like the other reviewer stated, the hooks started to rust after only a few exposures to water and its rubber covering is disintegrating. I liked these bags and needed extra storage, so I bought a set of Jandd Economy panniers for my front rack. The Economy panniers use a bungie strap/stainless hook instead of the nylon straps/buckles/velcro/long hook system on the Mini Mountain panniers. The bungie system makes the panniers much easier to remove and install as I can lift up on the handle and they unhook from the rack instead of having the reach behind and loosen the muddy straps. I bought an extra pair of bungie straps with hooks direct from Jandd and installed them in place of the nylon straps. They attach without issues using the existing hardware. I ran the bungie behind the horizontal guide strap instead of putting the hook between the two buckles. It even seems to do a better job of sway control than the nylon straps, but the vertical compression strap is still necessary for both the Mini Mountain and Economy panniers for my application. The panniers do a good job of fending off water except if sprayed directly at the zippers, which results in a pool of water at the bottom. I have been thinking about poking a small drain hole at the bottom of each pannier with a soldering iron and installing a grommet. I usually pack everything in garbage bags and dry sacks instead of relying on rain covers.Other wishes:- It would be nice if the side reflective strips were attached with velcro instead of sewed on. I stealth camp from time to time and I tape over them, but it's still nice to have reflectiveness on the road.- The leather handle wrap or handles should be removable. I usually have a couple of dry sacks strapped on top of the rack so it would be better if the handles could lay completely flat. Ideally, I wish that the handles were bolted to where the top hooks are attached so that they could be removed as needed.- The HDPE stiffeners should be drilled or skeletonized to make them lighter. I haven't figured out how to remove them without damage so that I can drill them myself. I also thought about replacing them with lighter carbon fiber panels.- It needs a way for attaching a shoulder strap. There are a couple of pull tabs at the ends of the main zipper but I'm not sure if they would stand up to having D-rings placed on them and a strap attached to the rings. I will probably devise something that attaches to the stiffener where the top hooks are bolted to.Overall, I am pleased with these Jandd panniers. I bought this set as it was one of few panniers advertised as off-road capable, and based on the reviews, I was confident that they would hold up to their intended use.

... in the mid 80's and still use it today pretty much every weekend

I bought one of their simple rack top bags back in the mid 80's and still use it today pretty much every weekend. I was shocked when I looked them up after 30yrs and found they still made the same great bag my wife wanted one. The cheap panniers we used for several years were falling apart and I showed her these and she gave the approval. I've had them now for two years JANDD just makes really GREAT stuff! We have used these bags all year around farmers market runs and summer camping and vacation trips pack dads mule of a bike up with a days worth of beach gear and lunches etc and were gone all day.Cant say enough good things its nice to see a company around this long and still making really really good stuff that lasts a long time and is made very well!! Thank you Jandd!

These are good for groceries for one person for 5 days

I am a multi cross state, 20yr exp Touring rider. Jandd is the only brand to use. These are good for groceries for one person for 5 days, an overnight campout, or a weekend outing with front panniers. If you use this for daily use around town, you might want to consider an elastic cord mounting solution so it is easier to remove.
