Award Winning Book with Top Honors
I review many children's books and seek out the best of the best. Only a few are awarded top children's book honors in any given year. This book is one of the top two books of 2009/2010. It's only been out a very short time and has already won multiple top awards, including the coveted Mom's Choice Award GOLD! It's illustrations are breathtaking and the story integrates superbly with the art on every page. The illustrations vividly portray the heartfelt emotions this child feels each day dealing with his Mother's battle with cancer. The illustrator, award-winning Shennen Bersani, has surely produced a masterpiece once again. What's unique is the illustration art, the use of color to describe emotions and mood, and the fact that the book applies to every child in the entire world age 9 months through 99 years. It's not just a mother-with-cancer book, although important. Every child and parent in the world can benefit from learning that children experience clearly-defined moods of happiness, sadness, envy, and more, every single day of their lives. These emotions and moods are represented by the colors of the rainbow. One color describing a single mood on every page. Parents experience these moods every day too. Parents show their moods to their children and other adults. They can truly enjoy this book while benefiting from a better understanding of themselves. On top of all of this, it's even a pop-up board book. The pages can withstand heavy use by small children or some adults. It feels so good turning these thick (board) pages. The surprise last page includes a bunch of glorious pop-up balloons, illustrating the emotional mood colors presented throughout the book. This is a must-have!

Review from Books That Heal Kids
I discovered Let My Colors Out about a month ago and when I read the title, I knew this book was very special. Using colors to represent emotions is a wonderful way to let kids get their feelings out when coping with a parent going through cancer treatment. As a school counselor, I am excited to have this book on my shelf to share with children and families going through the very hard process of a family illness. I also like that this book is concrete and reads beautifully at the same time. I highly recommend this bibliotherapy healer!

Great way to help kids express their feelings during times of grief, fear, anxious times etc. In a classroom, we can remind students to acknowledge how they are feeling when expressing emotions negatively by referring to a colour and it makes them step back and think about what is making them feel the way the are instead of just reacting.

My little girl and I love this book. It has helped her immensely to deal with all the feelings she has since I've been diagnosed with cancer. She now understands it's okay to feel all the feelings she has from a child's point of view. It has also helped me explain to her that mommy understands her feelings too. 💞
