Doctor Strange [4K UHD]

"Doctor Strange" is chock full of mind-bending special effects and that's great. But what makes this truly a 5-star movie, in my opinion, is the writing. The plot is interesting and the dialogue rich, combining humor with pathos in an effective script that tells a very intriguing story. Strange is a complex character who is almost unique in the superhero genre. For example: He is not a mutant nor has he been "created" in the same manner that The Hulk was through a scientific experiment that went wrong or Captain America was through a scientific experiment that went right. He is also not an "accidental superhero" who was given special powers from an external source ala Spiderman. Instead, his power lies within himself and because it does that makes Doctor Strange oddly accessible to those of us who are otherwise "ordinary" human beings. He, in essence, gives us a ray of hope, allowing us to think - even believe - that we, too, can become a superhero if we have the discipline to tap into the hidden strengths we all possess. (Few of us have that kind of discipline - I certainly don't - but that doesn't lessen the fact that Stephen Strange helps us understand that we all have the potential to be much greater than we currently are.) Director Scott Derrickson - who also co-wrote the script - did not, much to my great relief, allow himself to be seduced by the amazing CGI but, instead, used the special effects to enhance the movie while allowing his actors to not just tell the story but actually be the story. I only wish more directors did that. The cast is terrific, something that I've come to expect when Marvel movies are made. Benedict Cumberbatch is perfect in the role as the egotistical Stephen Strange but although he is nominally the star of the film his supporting cast is equally wonderful. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, and Tilda Swinton are brilliant as is Mads Mikkelsen as the villain. There are, in fact, no weak links in the cast. And that, along with Derrickson's seamless direction and some truly great writing, make this a wonderful film.

Bought all of the Marvel backstory films before Avengers Assemble. Did not care for later Dr Strange films but first film was reaygood.

This is a true must-see movie in my opinion. I do not normally give movies 5 stars as i prefer to give 4 and have people actually read them instead of glossing over any 5 stars as fake. This is not a fake review at all. I prefer to give 4 and then qualify it in the details section, but let my joy get ahead of me and I clicked 5 and then save before I forgot. LOL. Anyway, the theatrical version was much better than the first time I watched it when it came out. You cannot go wrong by either renting this or purchasing it if it is not too expensive. It makes me thirst for a Theatrical release of the 2nd film in the Dr. Strange realm. I hope there is another one. They can keep on making these and I will keep on watching them.

I got to say that there is no stopping the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it surges with success in a year that showed Marvel’s dominance with Captain America Civil War. This movie shows that Marvel can be successful with something new in a long-time favorite in Doctor Strange. Standing on its own, the film is about Steven Strange, a prominent surgeon who ends up with the horrible misfortune of being in a car accident that cripples his hands. This pretty much ends his career as he spends every dime to fix his hands but to no avail. But he is desperate to get his life back, so when a lead to getting better must take him to the other side of the world, he takes it and ends up being a part of something greater. Strange discovers magic from a powerful sorcerer known as The Ancient One who slowly and steadily grants him the knowledge to wield powers that could heal him, but even more important she wants him to become something greater in the fight against supernatural evil. Especially when a former disciple of The Ancient One wants the ultimate power of life and death, Strange must use all the knowledge at his disposal to save the world. The MCU stories are of adventure, comedy, sci-fi, but this one actually entertains magic, and it is amazing and as real as all the other Marvel films. Marvel brings forward a good story with exceptional actors and actresses, from Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mads Mikkelsen, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, and Tilda Swinton. But it is the special effects that are amazing as well as a phenomenal story. The 3D Blu-ray experience is still great, with phenomenal quality as the effects truly pop out. The special features are great with a good number of behind-the-scenes as well as deleted scenes. As well as a much-appreciated digital copy.

Great movie. Benedict Cumberbatch outstanding. He IS Dr. Strange in the flesh as if he stepped out of the comic books.

So I love dr. Strange and have for many years I read all the comic books and if I had the money I buy as much memorabilia so I could afford. The movie in my estimation is a work of art and is entertaining from start to finish . The sequences where he moves to the various Dimensions either in combating his archenemy dormammu or learning his craft are absolutely fantastic in nature and some of the best special effects I've ever seen. The movie has spiritual implications for me on multiple levels. Not just in fantasy but in actuality due to my own personal philosophy on it perceptions of what is out there to the human spirit. Also the special features are very well done and give someone who's never heard of dr. Strange a good overview of how it all began and of course how the movie is put together. This movie is a real keeper and I have no doubt you will watch it multiple times as time passes by

“Doctor Strange” è uno dei più recenti capitoli del Marvel Cinematic Universe e introduce un personaggio meno conosciuto rispetto, ad esempio, a Thor e Capitan America, ma non meno affascinante. Il percorso che porta l’arrogante medico Stephen Strange a diventare un maestro delle arti mistiche e soprattutto a mettere da parte il suo ego smisurato, trovando una nuova motivazione, è reso davvero con efficacia. Il film alterna sapientemente scene d’azione e combattimento e momenti più introspettivi, dedicati all'evoluzione del personaggio. Gli effetti speciali, soprattutto quelli che ricordano le geometrie dell’artista olandese M.C. Escher, sono spettacolari. Bellissimi scene e costumi e ottima la colonna sonora, che alterna motivi epici ad altri di stile orientale. Ottimo il cast, che ha reso sapientemente i personaggi. Veramente incantevole Tilda Swinton nei panni dell’Antico e Benedict Cumberbatch è uno Strange perfetto. Come tutti i film Marvel, dopo i titoli di coda sono presenti due scene che schiudono nuove prospettive di come si potrebbe evolvere la storia nel MCU. Molto divertente è la prima, in cui vediamo Strange e Thor e che sicuramente è propedeutica al prossimo film sul dio del tuono. In definitiva, un film avvincente e godibile, un must per i fan degli eroi Marvel. Mi sento di fare solo un piccolo appunto: l’antagonista Kaecilius - un affascinante Mads Mikkelsen - è poco approfondito, sarebbe stato bello sapere qualcosa di più del suo passato. L’edizione blu-ray è arricchita da una serie di contenuti speciali, come le tradizionali scene tagliate, i dietro le quinte, il processo creativo che ha portato alla nascita del film, la realizzazione delle scene di combattimento e così via. Molto divertente il video “Team Thor: part 2” in cui possiamo seguire Thor alle prese con problemi molto terresti, come il pagamento dell’affitto.

Pretty good action and good special effects. They always seem to sneak some pretty good humor into these avengers series. I liked that he was so skeptical and arrogant and got a huge dose of seeing is believing. Some of the special effects were kind of strange and hard to understand what was supposed to be happening, but that doesn't detract from the story line at all. All in all, good fun and good escape.

Compré "Doctor Strange: Hechicero Supremo" en formato Blu-Ray 3D y quedé encantado con esta edición. Aunque incluye únicamente el disco 3D, la presentación se siente especial gracias al Slipcover de muy buena calidad, con relieve y brillo que hacen que resalte muchísimo en la colección. La película, dirigida por Scott Derrickson, cuenta la historia del neurocirujano Stephen Strange, interpretado magistralmente por Benedict Cumberbatch, quien después de un accidente que destruye su carrera encuentra una nueva realidad en las artes místicas. La cinta está llena de mensajes sobre transformación, rendición del ego y el despertar interior, y eso la hace distinta a las típicas películas de superhéroes. Sobre la calidad del 3D: El 3D aquí es uno de los mejores de Marvel, sin exagerar. Las escenas de los mundos espejo, portales y fractales se ven espectaculares y muy profundas. La sensación de inmersión es real, casi como estar dentro de un caleidoscopio viviente. Si te gusta el cine 3D bien aprovechado, este es de los títulos que justifican completamente el formato. Calidad de Imagen y Sonido: La imagen es limpia, brillante y con colores vivos. El sonido es envolvente y poderoso, perfecto para escenas místicas y batallas astrales. Presentación Física: Slipcover muy bonito, bien terminado. El disco viene en caja Blu-Ray estándar, pero el slip le da todo el encanto. Envío: Llegó rápido, sin golpes, sin esquinas dobladas y el disco totalmente nuevo. Conclusión: Si amas coleccionar ediciones 3D o simplemente eres fan de Marvel, este es un must. Visualmente hipnótica, envolvente y preciosa en la estantería. Una película para volverse a ver muchas veces. 🔮✨ Recomendada al 100%.

Dr. Strange ist einer der Marvel-Charaktere welchen ich im Grunde genommen nur vom Namen und der Erscheinung her im Kopf hatte. Ich wusste nicht wirklich was ich von diesem Superhelden halten sollte, angesichts des doch komplett gegensätzlichen Hintergrunds des Charakters im Vergleich zu anderen Marvel-Figuren. Ja, Magie wurde bereits mit der Thor-Reihe etabliert… Dennoch fühlt sich Dr. Strange bislang komplett anders an als seine restlichen Superheldenkollegen- selbst in Vergleich zu den Thor-Filmen, welche eher in die Richtung Science-Fantasy gehen. Trotzdem, für mich persönlich erwies sich der Ausflug in die eher strangere Marvelhelden-Ecke als wohl willkommene Abwechslung. Story im Groben: Des vollkommen selbstverliebten Egomanen und Ausnahme-Chirurgen Dr. Stephen Stranges größtes Kapital sind sein überragender Intellekt und seine fähigen Hände. Letztere verletzt er sich bei einem selbstverschuldeten Auto-Unfall schwer. So schwer dass der Doc seinen Beruf vermutlich niemals wieder ausführen kann. Strange lässt jedoch nichts unversucht und peilt jede noch so experimentelle Reha an, was ihn an den Rand des Bankrotts treibt. Dies bringt den rational denkenden Strange sogar soweit sein letztes bisschen Kohle für einen Guru-Trip nach Nepal hinzublättern. Dort erwartet ihn widererwarten keine Heilung… Jedoch eröffnet sich ihm alsbald eine größere, ihm zuvor verborgen gewesene Welt und eine gänzlich neue, wenn auch gefährliche, Lebensaufgabe. Meine Meinung: Origin-Stories sind mittlerweile eher eine „Meh“-Angelegenheit für mich. Sie verlaufen alle nachdem selben Muster. Meistens trumpfen sie zwar mit einer starken ersten Hälfte auf… allerdings kämpfen sie dann in der zweiten Hälfte mit ihren eigenen, eher schlicht gehaltenen Stories, Bösewichten und aufgezwungenen Endkämpfen. Gerade das MCU schmeißt hier oftmals mit öden, eindimensionalen Bösewichten um sich (Ronan, Obodiah Stane, Red Skull, Yellowjacket…). Und obwohl Dr. Strange dasselbe „Problem“ hat stört es mich hier kurioserweise keinen Meter. Der Schurke des Films (routiniert gespielt vom großen Mads Mikkelsen) ist tatsächlich genauso schablonenhaft und lame wie Malekith aus Thor: The Dark World (dem absoluten King unter den langweiligen MCU-Schurken). Eine krasse Verschwendung von Talent, wie man leider sagen muss. Jedoch baut der Film parallel einen weiteren Erzfeind für Strange auf. Der „Endkampf“ ist zwar antiklimatisch… aber auch unerwartet komisch. Trainingsmontagen dürfen natürlich bei keinem Origin-Film fehlen… Aber auch diese sind hier zumindest visuell anspruchsvoll umgesetzt. Und die schnippisch-zynischen Kommentare des Docs machen vieles wett. Womit ich zu den Charakteren und dem Cast kommen möchte. Dr. Strange ist ein liebenswert-asozialer Charakter. Er ist Tony Stark… nur eben noch ar$CHiger. Stark ist der Philanthrop… Strange der Misanthrop. Und auch wenn ich ihn im wahren Leben (wie jeder normale Mensch vermutlich auch) aus tiefsten Herzen hassen würde, so ist es doch eine wahre Freude Strange zuzuschauen und zuzuhören. Das er hierbei von Benedict Cumberbatch verkörpert wird trägt wohl mit dazu bei Strange ins Herz zu schließen. Ich mag diesen Schauspieler, mit seiner sonoren Stimme, extrem gerne. Und wie seine Kollegen Downey Jr., Evans und Hemsworth passt ihm die Rolle wie maßgeschneidert. MCU typisch sieht man allerhand große Namen in weiteren Rollen: Tilda Swinton spielt die Älteste, bzw. die Lehrmeisterin des Docs. In der Tradition Yoda, Gandalf und Dumbledore ist sie sehr mächtig und geheimnisvoll… Ich persönlich hätte gerne etwas mehr über ihren Charakter erfahren... Chiwetel Ejiofor spielt einen weiteren Schüler der Ältesten, Meister Mordo. Dieser stellt einen guten Kompagnon für Strange dar- wenn auch nur für kurze Zeit. Bei ihm bin ich mal auf zukünftige Filme gespannt. Mads Mikkelsen spielt den Antagonisten Kaecillius… Und ja… Kaecillius ist böse… Mehr kann man von ihm nicht sagen. Man hat zwar versucht ihm eine Art Motiv für sein Handeln zu geben… Aber es ist eher eine Ausrede denn eine glaubwürdige Erklärung zu seinem Hang zur Dunklen Seite. Da kann auch Mikkelsen nicht viel raus holen. Wobei seine Szenen mit Strange sehr humorvoll sind mitunter. Allerdings geht ärgerlicherweise bei einer Szene der Wortwitz durch die Übersetzung verloren… Zumindest wenn man den Film auf Deutsch schaut. Dann gibt es noch eine Art Love-Interest durch Rachel McAdams gespielte Figur der Dr. Palmer. Dieser Nebenplot wird allerdings ganz selten nur aufgegriffen und in diesem Film auch nicht weit vorangetrieben. Sie kommt zwar sympathisch rüber… das war es aber dann auch schon. Benedict Wong darf noch als eine Art von Comic-Relief in Form von Mister Wong fungieren. Die Szenen mit ihm sind ganz nett. Er ist durchaus sympathisch und bleibt eher im Gedächtnis als bspw. Thor`s Krieger-Kumpane oder Cap`s Truppe im ersten Captain America. Die Effekte im Film sind superb. Das ist mehr oder weniger von den Marvel-Filmen zu erwarten. Bei Dr. Strange legt man trotzdem noch eine Schippe drauf, mit all seinen surrealen und bombastischen Bildern und Astralebenen… Inception auf LSD könnte man sagen. Grandios… wenn auch nicht ganz neu. Und manchmal sogar schwankend: das fiese Obermonster am Schluss sah für mich z.B. wie ein Bösewicht aus einem Disney-Zeichentrick-Film aus… Der musikalische Score von Michael Giacchino hingegen überzeugt durch die Bank weg, bzw. überrascht sogar! Denn eine weitere Problem-Zone der MCU-Filme sind leider, leider die uninspirierten Durchschnitts-Scores... Nur wenige Musikstücke bleiben einem meist im Gedächtnis hängen. Und zugegebenermaßen hat auch Dr. Strange nur eine Hand voll eingängiger Melodien welche man eindeutig zuordnen kann. Dennoch, hört man den Score für sich, losgelöst vom Film, wird man förmlich überrascht was Giacchino hier gezaubert hat. Definitive Empfehlung für Filmmusik-Fans! Fazit: Bei Dr. Strange gingen die Produzenten auf Nummer sicher. Das merkt man. Allerdings macht mir der Film um Welten mehr Spaß als andere Vertreter des Genres. Ich mag das Setting, ich mag den Hauptcharakter, den Cast im Allgemeinen finde ich super, ich mag die Optik, ich steh auf den stimmungsvollen Soundtrack- und vor allem finde ich kann Dr. Strange, die Guardians mal ausgenommen, eher für sich alleine stehen als alle anderen Einzelfilme des MCU. Die Avengers werden zwar mal erwähnt (und auch den Stark-Tower sieht man im Hintergrund ein, zwei Mal), allerdings vermisst man weder Iron-Man, noch den guten Cap, noch Hulk oder Thor(ben). Man erwartet eigentlich bei allen anderen Filmen das mehr als nur ein Avenger zu sehen ist. Ant-Man (obwohl m.M.n. auch sehr gelungen) hatte ebenso eine leichte Avengers-Starthilfe. Daher kann man diesen Film gänzlich losgelöst vom MCU-Background genießen… Zumindest wenn man nur diesen Film hier sieht. Dr. Strange wird nicht nur in Thor 3 wieder auftauchen, sondern auch in den gigantischen Infinity War-Teilen der Avengers… Und spätestens hier sollte man die meisten der vorherigen Filme gesehen haben… Wer auf kurzweilige Popkorn-Unterhaltung mit einem großen Rundumschlag Magie und Mystik steht wird hier bestens bedient. Ich freue mich schon auf weitere Abenteuer um den exzentrischen Doc… Volle Empfehlung!
