Purchased the Blueant M1 based on recommendations and reviews here. I agree that it sounds bigger than it should, but it does do with a lot of compromises. It isn't that it sounds bad, either. Just don't expect it to sound like a much larger box, and you won't be disappointed. The subwoofer has a rear-facing tuned port. With any such design it is important to put the speaker a few inches from a wall or other reflective surface (putting it in a corner is even better). This also will increase the overall sound level by 3dB (6dB in the corner), and should flatten out the response a bit.Speaking of the response, I did a quick check with a sound pressure meter and sweep tones. As expected, there are a lot of strange nulls and peaks, and there is a lot of phase shifting magic to get the soundstage out as well as to get a better perception of frequency range. Again, it doesn't sound bad, just different. The test tones did tend to break up with the bass boost switched on (could have been a bluetooth thing, too), but I was unable to cause distortion, even at higher than normal listening listening levels with music and voice. I would recommend using the bass boost while listening to music, but it sounded better turned off when listening to voice, such as a podcast. I max out the volume on my phone and use the volume knob on the unit itself, which seems to work very well. My testing was done with the protective sleeve on, which does affect the tone of the speaker, for the better. I listened to a wide range of music, mostly classical and jazz, album rock and some 80s punk for good measure. The pairing process is dead simple, just hold the power button for a few seconds (from power-off) and search for it on your phone. My Nokia N95 responds to the player controls and automatically connects to the speaker when it is turned on. I was able to walk about 20 feet into another room before the sound started to cut out. I'm sure line-of-sight distance is greater. I am able to save custom equalizer settings on my phone (I have one for my car, headphones, and earbuds), so I am able to dial in settings that sound right to my ear. I didn't need to make big adjustments, so I think that's a positive. The speaker cuts out after a few seconds of silence, such as when you are browsing your library. There is a very noticeable click when the amps power down, and a quick ramp up when the speaker starts getting signal again. Some may find that annoying.Other speakers I've listened to were iPod dock units. I have a bluetooth device that connects to an iPod interface. The cost of the Blueant was in the ballpark of these units, but thanks to the playback controls is a little more useful, and it looks much cleaner than going with an iPod speaker system, thanks to not having the darn dock connector sticking out of the top (who designs those things, anyway?). And I think not having to pay the iPod tax means they can spend a little more on the sound quality.

BlueAnt M1 Speakers
Bought these speakers to use on the road with my Blackberry Tour streaming Pandora Radio via Bluetooth. These speakers exceeded my expectations right out of the box. The package includes a very nice travel case that does not need to be removed to use. There are flaps that use velcro to cover the front speakers and controls as well as the charging port on the rear. The case seems solid and very well built. The controls on the front are easy to view and intuitive. Pairing with my Blackberry was very easy...just like pairing a handsfree device. Sound quality was very good. I don't consider myself an audiophile but I am the person who usually upgrades their car stereo because I like my music to sound rich and clear at all volumes. This unit provides BIG sound despite its portable size. I bought it to use mainly in hotel rooms when traveling. It fills the room and everyone comments about how good it sounds. I have found that it sounds best when placed in a corner or on a shelf in a bookcase. This allows the bass port on the rear to reflect a deeper base tone. The wall charger seems a bit cheap but I don't see it as a weakness...it charges and that's all it was designed to do. Battery life seems to be tied to how high you set the volume. Moderate volumes saw play times of 5-6 hours with bass boost on. I'm sure you can get longer life at lower volumes especially after a few charging cycles. I set the volume on the speaker and then fine tune from the Blackberry. It also allows for my Blackberry to be used as a remote with all media controls...pause, skip, repeat, volume. One very nice feature...if you receive a call the speaker will mute and you can answer the call like normal. Upon ending the call the music will resume without user input. The unit is on the pricey side but is head and shoulders above any other unit I have tried. Would definitely buy again!

Poor Design on Many Levels
I bought these speakers to use in the factory I work in, a high-noise environment where earbuds/headphones aren't allowed. It was meant to replace a smaller Artdio bluetooth speaker system that works well but isn't loud enough to compete well with the background noise. I planned to mate it to my Sprint/Mogul phone. My first set of speakers worked well for about an hour, then began to cut out and miss every second or two. Since I have many other bluetooth speakers/headsets, all of which continued to function well sitting right next to the sputtering Blueant unit, I decided the Blueant speakers were defective and returned them. (My return was handled courteously and professionally, which is why this item gets two stars instead of one.) My next set of Blueants seemed at first to work better, and produced rich, excellent sound. However, I noted with dismay that not only did the batteries only last about three hours at the power-setting required in the high-noise environment, but the charger was so weak that _even with the charger plugged in_ the batteries would die, because the speakers drew more power than it was capable of putting out. Then, after about three days of use, the unit began cutting out and sputtering just like the first one did. And again, all of my other Bluetooth audio stuff kept right on working just fine. Therefore, the phone was definitely not the problem.Due mostly to the turnaround time on the return, I've kept these speakers so long I don't feel it's right to return them again. But due to the battery/power issues, even if the bluetooth system worked they'd be useless to me. Meanwhile, my Artdios keep soldiering on at max volume, day after day after day without problem one. If only they were louder...
