Finland 8 (Lonely Planet)

It has great overall info about Finland and details about most towns for when you visit them. This is the 8th edition published May 2015. I am very happy with my purchase.

So far, its an easy read, organized where I can find everything I need quickly. Explains transportation around Finland great !! Wish they had more budget restaurants in Helsinki.

Good information but the print is so small that anyone over 45 would need a magnifying glass. I'd like more pictures.

This is a very simple guide in comparison with earlier Lonely Planet Guides. Lots of information about where to eat, less on where to stay and not that much on walking tours etc which usually are included for the bigger cities in a country. There was not a section on the language - not even on how to say "hallo" and "goodbye" in Finnish. I think the guide would be helpful for my visit but not as helpful as I am used to expect from Lonely Planet books.

The major guidebook publishers each have their styles, which you may like more or less, and all do a decent job of covering the main centres. What makes this particular LP notable is that it does by far the best job of the Finland and broader Scandinavia books of covering Finnish Lapland, in particular hiking opportunities.

Wie in der Überschrift geschrieben, halte ich den Finnland Lonely Planet für das bisher Exemplar aus meiner mittlerweile 20-bändigen Sammlung (darunter sowohl Country Guides als auch reine Städteführer). Meine Reise führte mich von Helsinki über Lahti nach Rovaniemi und schließlich nach Muonio. Von dort aus ging es wieder Richtung Süden nach Oulu und Tampere. In Punkte Rundreise habe ich mich also nicht an die vier Standard-Empfehlungen von LP gehalten, sondern bin individuell nach persönlichem Interesse vorgegangen. Bei den Hotels und Restaurants habe ich jedoch zu 100% den Tipps vertraut und wurde kein einziges Mal enttäuscht - eine Premiere für mich. Die Restaurant-, Bar-, Hotel und Museumsbeschreibungen sind in typischer LP-Manier sehr lebendig, unterhaltsam und pointiert geschrieben und machen Lust, auf Entdeckungsreise zu gehen. Die fabelhaften Donuts im Pynnikki-Park von Tampere hätte ich dabei ohne LP nie im Leben gekostet. Kritik könnte an der gewöhnungsbedürftigen Systematik bei den Subkapiteln geübt werden. Wer's kennt, hat nichts zu befürchten und kommt gut damit zurecht. LP-Guides sind eben nicht zur Nachschlagewerk, sondern auch unterhaltsame Lektüre, die vollständig gelesen werden sollte. Im Unterschied zu anderen Exemplaren ist der Finnland-LP inhaltlich nicht durch die amerikanisch/britische Kulturbrille des Autors geschrieben, sondern entspricht ganz gut meiner mitteleuropäischen Perspektive auf das Reisen und die Welt... Ein Hinweise zum Schluss: Wer so wie ich gerne zwischen zwei Reisezielen mal eine Kanufahrt auf einem idyllischen See riskiert, sollte sich mglw. noch einen ergänzenden Guide anschaffen. Ich habe diesbzgl. leider keine Tipps; es sei nur der Vollständigkeit halber erwähnt, da LP hier - auch aus Platzgründen - keinen umfassenden Überblick über alle Regionen Finnlands hinweg liefert. Fazit: exzellent - fünf Sterne
