Worthwhile and current.
Very erudite yet readable analysis--contemporary yet contextually savvy with lots of recent history and commentary. A superb read in the genre. - GK

Superficial and disappointing
Disappointing. This isn't a serious book. The author seems to have written it very quickly. There are many references to his own previous works and also to his accomplishments as head of that or that commission. OK, we get it, you're a big figure in the higher ed world. But if so, couldn't you have thought more deeply and tried to provide more insight into higher education today? Instead, this quickie read provides a superficial gloss on the problems of higher ed. The tone is smug and self-congratulatory. For a far deeper work on higher work, it's better to look at Goldin and Katz's book, The Race between Education and Technology. Zemsky's book offers little to a reader trying to understand where American higher education stands today and how its problems could best be addressed.

This aparently is Zemsky's 7th book. I have been reading his work for over a decade and he has been around for over 4 decades. Clearly one of the most honest and thought provoking writers in terms of where Higher Education must shift. He actually takes real positions and provides real recommendations as to where we must change. Further... he is a faculty member. He has several other books on Amazon... I recommend them as well.
