Solid and reliable entrenching tool – worth it
I’m genuinely impressed with this entrenching tool. The build quality feels solid right out of the box — sturdy metal, no cheap parts, and it doesn’t feel like it will bend or break under pressure. The folding mechanism is tight and secure, which is important when you actually start using it. Used it for digging in hard soil and it handled the job without any issues. It’s compact enough to carry easily, but still strong enough for real work. The included pouch is a nice bonus and makes storage convenient. Overall, this is not just a “survival gimmick” — it’s a functional tool that actually does what it’s supposed to. Good value for the price. Would definitely recommend.

A Great and Simple Design
The initial impressions of the entrenching tool itself are quite good if not impressive to say the least. The package that the tool comes in is more of a cardboard clamshell with a mission statement from the manufacturer on the back. The manufacturer themselves being well known for their firearms in particular their pistols have come forth and put in modern design augmentations into this entrenching tool. In terms of design, the tool itself has a utilitarian design aesthetic in both form and function. The shovel head can swivel into several positions as marked by the indentations in the hinge; such positions allow a user some variability in terms of their digging and entrenching function. Upon closer inspection, there are more nuances to take into account, take for example the locking mechanism of the entrenching tool; it is a large turn-style knob in which turning clockwise tightens it while turning counter-clockwise loosens it. Furthermore, a closer look at the locking knob reveals that there is a flat slot cut into the knob itself. The function of the slot is to further tighten the locking mechanism through the use of the spine of the included push saw. In addition to this function, the locking knob is held in place by a heavy duty flat-head slotted bolt that can also be adjusted by the included push saw. The included saw as mentioned before, is kept inside the hollow handle of the entrenching tool and can be access by unscrewing the end cap counter-clockwise from the handle; once removed the saw can be attached to the handle by inserting it in reverse and putting the end cap over the saw and tightening it down clockwise to secure it into place. In terms of the design of the saw itself, the saw is a push-type saw in which the cutting teeth of the saw is in reverse, which would mean that the cutting action of the saw for removing the most material is in the forward pushing motion. While this design maybe counter intuitive to most other saw designs out there, its functions may be intended to serve as a root saw in which case while digging, users may find themselves upon a tree root that requires removal. As for the design of the handle itself, it is indeed hollow and extends by which requires the user to turn the bottom half clockwise to loosen the lower half. Once the lower half of the handle is extended, the user must turn counter-clockwise to tighten the handle for proper digging and entrenching usage. The choice of materials in the design of this entrenching tool in that for some user may seem questionable, in which case while the head of the entrenching tool is made of carbon steel, the handle is made of a polymer plastic, the same kind that can be found on Glock’s pistols. How reliable or durable can this entrenching tool be if made of polymer plastic? For the most part, Glock pistols of been around for quite some time and being well known for their reliability, durability and usage, it is a question that is up to the user to determine for themselves. The use of polymer plastics for the design of this entrenching tool would be to cut down significantly on the weight as part of the many tools a user may carry with them while adventuring. The inclusion of the storage pouch is an addition to the entrenching tool; however it leaves more to be desire as the quality is not quite the same as the entrenching tool itself. The pouch is made of soft canvas with a belt loop stitched to the back with two square thin metal rings for attachment, the bottom of the poach has a metal drain hole for excess moisture or water and the flap of the pouch is kept closed by two strips of Velcro. The entrenching tool has the appearance of a regular shovel in that many of which will find self-explanatory in term of usage. It functions in much in same way a regular sized shovel would except it is much shorter. The build quality of the entrenching tool itself is quite solid, stiff and heavy-duty and performs excellently as intend. When compared to other entrenching tools on the market and even ones distributed by the military, they mostly have similar design aesthetics with a triangular handle with three joints and sections that fold up into a compact form. While for many users other there with experiences of these types of entrenching tools on the market, this particular one can be another option to chosen from and well worth taking into consideration. Overall, I would say that this is an excellent and quality built entrenching tool in a great and simple design.

Super light and compact shovel that works like a good shovel should.
Great pack shovel. This thing is super light and compact. It locks good in three positions. Just fighting the locking knob with a strong hand has been enough to keep it locked. Or you can use the saw that is stored in the handle to tighten it snug. Some have mentioned disregarding the saw. It main functions are to tighten the knob and also, its tip is a slot screwdriver that fits the screw in the lock knob. It’s not flimsy by any means. It cuts a a three inch branch. The key is to extend the shove all the way and use it like a pruning saw. And like a good sawing. Make sure the wood is stable. Not bouncing all over the place. The saws other good use is in making Dakota fire holes. Sometime you hit some roots that are a pain the chop and I’m driving my X7 hatchet head into the dirt. Using the saw the same works well for cutting roots poking the hole through. If it’s your only saw you have with you, I’d avoid cutting in the dirt with it. All in all a good shovel. Oh yah by the way. The easiest way to dig a hole any of the short pack shovels , is to kneel on the ground and dig from that position. Put the Glock in the hoe position and chop away. Being low puts good force to the ground at the best angle. It’s a shovel, not an axe. And since it’s only a shovel. It’ll last forever. Buy the Fiskars X7 if you want to chop. Super light and strong. Between these to tools, I can prepare a secure base camp. Happy Trails.

this is a very good design. I stopped carrying my old military E-tool ...
PROS: Looking at this only as an entrenching tool, this is a very good design. I stopped carrying my old military E-tool as a camping implement based mostly on its weight. The Glock tool is much lighter (at about 1 pound, 5 oz.) than most other modern competitors: - military models are about twice the weight, depending on model - SOG's ripoff of the Glock design is a half pound heavier - Gerber/Fiskar e-tool is more than a pound heavier So, shy of spending a ton of money on a titanium shovel, the Glock is your best bet for a lightweight packable shovel for basic camp use. Despite its light weight, it is very durable and well made. From an engineering standpoint, they were able to save significant weight by (A) using the stamp shape to stiffen the end product, (B) using a thinner gauge steel, (C) using hardened and WELL tempered carbon steel instead of the pig-iron that most e-tools are made of, and finally (D) using composite polymer in place of the wood or steel usually employed for the handle. As the owner of many Glock products, I TRUST that their polymer formulation is as tough and indestructible as ever. CONS: First thing I noticed within seconds of opening this package was that the pouch they supply is absolute junk. It's going in the trash. At the price point for this tool, I had no real expectation that the pouch would be anything worth having, so no harm, no foul. I'll make or modify a sturdy MOLLE pouch to fit this tool. The second glaring error (and this one really disappointed me) is that the saw is BACKWARDS. If you look carefully at the teeth in my pictures, they are oriented for a cut on the FORWARD stroke. This flies in the face of every saw ever designed, and really has me questioning the otherwise flawless utilitarian engineering that Glock is famous for! Hand saws should cut on the BACK stroke (ie: the pulling portion of the stroke). This is because blades have a LOT more tensile strength than torsional or compression strength. Putting any real pressure on a forward cut stroke makes bending this blade almost a certainty. This drawback also relates to the saw. A standard 9" reciprocating blade would have fit this application perfectly, but there's no way to swap it out. I'm now looking to see if there's any way I can MAKE a chuck to (A) hold a standard recipro blade, and (B) fit on the entrenching tool handle. It would have been VERY easy for Glock to design this to use standard recipro blades. The only reason NOT to do that would be if they were offering replacement blades... yet they are not. I have looked online and I see NO replacement blades available anywhere. Once you've bent this saw (or if you're very careful while sawing... manage to dull it), it becomes useless as a feature. This point is nothing serious, but worth noting. The hand screw that is used to lock the shovel open, closed or at an angle is on the right side and is a bit large. It gets in the way a little when you use your right foot to stamp the shovel into the ground. Would have been better located behind the shovel than on the side. Final point... I was originally looking to get this in green or tan composite (much like the Glock knife and pistol offerings). Turns out there are no other colors available. Not a big deal. NOTES: It appears that a 7/8" diameter by 7" long plastic tube will fit nicely inside this handle. This means I may just ditch the saw, and add a small emergency survival/tool kit with various small items (multi-tool, reciprocating saw blades, line, wire, duct tape, etc). This might be the best option. This is yet another item that Glock could sell for this tool! I'm also considering sharpening and partially serrating one edge of this shovel blade for use as a root saw. I realize these saw or blade edges tend to dull very quickly when one is shoveling in rough ground, but better to have it and not need it... than to need it and not have it! Finally, while it may appear I'm knocking lots of little things about this tool, it IS what I purchased after carefully weighing the competition. Probably the ONLY "surprise" was the backwards saw teeth. Overall I'm quite satisfied with my purchase and would recommend it. All of my little gripes are posted only to help others make the same informed decision, and MAYBE... just maybe... someone at Glock reads this and makes a few simple improvements to the design!

Best e-tool there is
I bought two of these as gifts. I have several military e-tools (entrenching tool) but these are a step up. The best part is the hidden saw in the handle that you can’t get with a standard tri-fold version. Everyone should have an e-tool of some form in their car and the Glock version is probably the best and, like all e-tools, can double as a protection device if needed.

Light & compact for backpacking.
Light, compact, best camping item for a backpack, ever.!! Dig a firepit in no time and cover it easily before leaving. Shovel and level coals for cooking over the campfire. The push to cut saw inside the handle is handy for firewood too. Also if you're stuck offroad, - the second one i always kept in my vehicle can dig you out of a problem and get you moving again.! Bought this for my grandson. Mine I've had for 35 or 40 years and NEVER failed me.!!

6 years later
I have owned and abused this shovel for over 6 years now and taken it on many dozens, if not hundreds, of camping trips. I have beat the crap out of this thing and it just holds up. It still has about 90% of its finish left and the tightening lug works just as well as new. Once a year I just oil it and she's good to go. For $40 I have nothing bad to say.
