You can rotate the head 180 degrees to mortise larger stock but I have never done that with my machine. I think that it may be possible to install bushings (3/8" pipe nipples of sufficient length and longer bolts to attach column to base) between the column and base to raise the column enough to allow clearance for 6" stock. **Q: what is the largest bit it can take?** A: Delta’s bits only go to 1/2” but you can buy other brands up to 1” but you will need to be able to make a shank adapter. Delta tries to make you purchase their bits by using a non standard sized shank. **Q: Trying to have just one piece of equipment, Will this work as a drill press without the mortice bit?** A: I don't think it would be a very good drill press. First, the chuck is small, so you'll only be able to use small bits.
