The larger mice would be trapped with their tails outside of the door. That is traumatizing for both the mouse and me. Then one day a mouse was outside of the trap with the door closed on a foreleg. I was bitten while releasing the mouse. I had to find another solution. These traps are 12 inches in length, much longer than other humane traps, with a large opening which mimics a hole in a wall. The mouse needs to travel a longer distance in order to trigger the mechanism to close the door. The door swings downward instead of snapping upwards which also lessens the chance of limbs being caught. The longer length of these traps contain the whole mouse. No more tails caught on the outside! The mouse can also move freely within the trap. There is an easily accessible trough to replenish the bait, too. A couple of the mice even took a short nap after eating the peanut butter bait. Release of the mouse is fast and easy as the door flips upward after lifting the lever on the side. I hold the top of the door with a finger as an extra precaution until the mouse runs out. I highly recommend these traps for karma free trapping and releasing of house mice. Review: Works great! But use correctly for best results. - I have owned 2 of these for about a month now and I'm a little embarrassed about how many mice we caught. Apparently, they learned to avoid the old style traps. We used to catch about 2 mice every 6 months or so. It was like that for years. But I became suspicious when we weren't catching any and I knew they were around. I bought two of these traps and instantly began catching several a day! I think we've caught around 25 of them now. It could be because it got very cold just before I bought these, but still they are not touching the bait on the old traps. I learned from reading reviews here that the traps become fouled by the mice and cleaning them is a problem. I avoided that problem (mostly) by lining the bottom with 2" strips of light cardboard (cereal boxes). That also makes it much easier to bait the trap. Put bait on the cardboard and slide it in. I put a little bait near the door and more way back in the trap. After 3 weeks one of my traps stopped working, they stole the bait. I don't understand why, but the door would not close normally. I solved that problem by putting a little padding under the rear of the trap so it leans every so slightly forward. Problem solved. We're down to about one mouse a day. Maybe it's because it got warmer, or we caught most of them. Mouse has plenty of room to roam and tail will not get caught in door. Also, the springs are functional but light duty, so if the mouse gets caught in the door, it has a chance of freeing itself. PROS Large opening for mouse to enter. Large enough for entire mouse and tail to easily move around inside. Easy to see the mouse inside. Can get a bottle brush inside to clean. Design prevents mouse from chewing its way out. Bait area vents have metal reinforcements on the inside. Trigger is easily tripped by the light weight of a mouse. Large openings on both ends make it easy to release mouse from either side. CONS Very small bait area - limited to type of - and amount of - bait that can be used. Overall they are very functional and comparable to metal traps that I also own. I'm glad I bought them.
