The extension probably helps bond them so they don't come off the shaft on target penetration. They work great! I had six shafts done as fast as I could remove the old fletching, they look good and fly great. Easy to carry in my bow case so I'm going to start carrying more for any "emergency" repair. I've told everyone I see at my archery club to consider them.
