THIS levitating light bulb is DEFINITELY the coolest curiosity in our home. EVERYBODY sees it, then immediately wants to know HOW is it doing THAT??? My grandson can't keep his eyes off of it. Uh, he's not the only one. I keep it right on my desk where I watch it all the time. The principles of its operation are twofold. Magnetic levitation, where two magnetic poles oppose each other, the repulsive forces causing the light bulb to eerily float in midair. Defying the laws of gravity. You can pass most anything non-metallic through the air gap between the base and the bulb without affecting the levitation! Induction, where electrical power is transmitted wirelessly. That allows the light bulb to illuminate. Both principles combine to amaze and amuse in this de-light-ful item! Switching the light ON/OFF via the base switch adds to the mystique of this thing. While the light is not very bright, it is plenty illuminating to the curious. Patience and good eye-hand coordination is key to setting the light bulb on top of the base, getting it to float. Stay focused and 'centered' and you will attain success. Be FOREWARNED that the base magnetism is VERY STRONG! IF you miss getting the bulb to float it very likely will SNAP down onto the base with quite a bit of force! That magnetic draw is super strong, so it is imperative to center the bulb and go very CAREFULLY. ALSO, IF you unplug the base from your house AC power OR if your power goes out while the bulb is floating, the bulb WILL be drawn down to the base with a resounding THUD! This will occur whether the light itself is ON or OFF. Be forewarned about this. It will make you jump if you're not prepared for it or expecting it. (See my video, watch until the end where I actually unplug the base and let the bulb snap down) The build quality of this product is very high. The bulb itself looks interestingly Sci-Fi or old scary movie-ish. Everything about this levitating light bulb makes it well worth the price. So, get one and get ready to see your friends' de-light!

So firstly the good. It's a nicely crafted piece, looks ornate, and certainly was in-keeping with our higher-end decor. The bulb seems to move a lot, obviously given no friction, when the air conditioning turns on, but that, at least for us, was a positive as it's a reminder of it's novelty. However, if you are relying on this light to illuminate an area, be aware that it is annoying for the light to be shimmering and moving if you were to perhaps try and read by it. Overall, I bought it as a gift for my wife, with some doubts that she would see it as a bit too techy, but she absolutely loved it, it's a nice conversation piece on the side table near the entrance. There are some things however that have been a problem for me. - First and foremost, the bulb is smudged and scratched on the inside. Given it's purpose is to be looked at, this is a major drawback, we are currently trying to get the bulb replaced, but with a dirty bulb, the light reflected from it looks poor and anyone who takes a look can visible see smudges on the glass - The bulb is not interchangeable it appears, so firstly I cannot replace with a "clean" bulb, but also I'm assuming it will be defunct once the bulb expires. It is a LED, so hopefully that wont be for a while, but still, it's a disappointment - you need to make sure it is away from children's grasp, or inquisitive pets. If it takes even a minor knock, the bulb loses it's position and slams to the magnet in the base. While this hasn't broken the bulb so far, it's happened a dozen times, and with enough force that I fear it's only a matter of time (and remember, the bulb is not easily replaceable) - The wire is unseemly. The bulb will float without being plugged in, but you need the wire to make the light work. For this price, and given it's an LED and a pretty substantial base, I'd love to have seen a battery option for this, or at the least, a more discrete cord. The thick black style cord certainly detracts from the aesthetic, as well as limit my options on placement. - There is no brightness control, again, for the price this is disappointing. The result is a light that's a little too dim for practical use, and a little too bright to really look at it for too long. Feel's like the addition of a simple dimmer would have given customers the best of both worlds. I'd still recommend this to a friend, but I'd want to make sure they understand the caveats before buying.

I bought this for my brother for Christmas. Just now getting around to writing reviews, but he still displays this in his room years later. He's happy with it, so I am too.

It's good for decoration, but not for lighting. Not bright enough to light a closet let alone a room. But I didn't purchase it for its light so it's no big deal. Others are saying it's difficult to get to float, but I disagree. Takes maybe 10-15 seconds. Just make sure you hold the base down while you attempt to get the alignment right or the magnets will pull towards one another.

The intended effect is a slow, elegant rotation—not a rapid, accelerated spin. Could you please let me know if this behavior is normal or if it might be a manufacturing defect?"

Bought this for my 4th grade son’s magic act. We were surprised at how hard it was to balance just so, but with practice it gets easier and once you find the sweet spot it stays there pretty good. Definitely works. The bulb has been dropped several times on concrete and pulled on and off the base repetitively and still works like a champ. Base is definitely plastic with wood grain. Worked even with fabric between the base and the bulb. Forgive the duck tape on it in the picture our goal was not cool office light but embedded into a table top.

Grandson loved it!
