It’s a filter. I won’t know if it is effective until it catches particles or not. I can tell you that the mesh you can see inside through the hose hole in the filter. I don’t know if the mesh is fine enough or not. I just installed it when I replaced the factory power steering pump in my 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 RWD. The only thing worth writing about that I did not care for were the clamps that came with us. They could not Close tight enough to get over the bump part of the barbed connector on the hose. Are used normal screw on hose clamps and those worked out just fine.
