How far does the seed shoot to the sides? I am hoping for a spread that is between 12 and 15 feet wide and not more.

that will be about 12 to 15 don't turn crank so hard, love my spreader,I am 83 and it is easy for me. I just don't fill it so full.

Will it spread hay seed?

I spread fesque, oats, radishes, turnips, and some big blue stem seeds without a problem that I was aware of. However, we won't know until it germinates. I am still getting the gist of running the opening. Since I was on a very steep incline, I kept tripping and the spilling seeds

Has anybody actually used it with clover seed? (or any very small hard seed) Will the seed still pour out when you're not cranking it?

I have not used it for seeds only small granules but I wouldn't hesitate in using it for seeds it has a small lever that opens and closes the bin the crank has nothing to do with release only dispersing

Will the spreader spread buckwheat seed...buckwheat being quite a large seed ?

This Solo Spreader will spread material the size of rice. I would think the buckwheat seed will be to large for the spreader.
