These must have some highly flammable substance located regularly throughout the sticks. It's like the birthday candles that you can't blow out. It will smolder a little then when it hits that next batch of flammable material it bursts right back up. Because of this if you light one of these they just keep burning even if you submerge them or toss dirt over them. Just don't think they're out until they're out for several seconds. The striking pad will not work when wet so you have to be relatively careful. Fortunately they provide extras inside so you can use those if the exterior one gets wet. The ones inside are in a plastic bag and you MUST keep them in these bags if you're going to store them in the same container as the matches. The last thing you want is to drop your pack then have a match rub against a striking pad. The only con to these is because of the thickness of the matches it can't store that many. Because they are great in storms I would use these as a last resort since there are so few per container. Update 3/30/2014: I went backpacking yesterday and camped out overnight. The temperature was 21 when I woke and I worked to boil some water for breakfast using a Trangia alcohol stove and denatured alcohol as the fuel. There was no wind. I first tried a ferro rod and it failed. I tried several normal matches and they failed to light the alcohol. They wouldn't even stay lit for more than a couple of seconds even when help upside down. I was confused. I tried the lighter and it wouldn't even light up! The last resort were these matches. Thank goodness I always pack these. These went up right away and stayed lit! I held it to the alcohol and had to leave it almost touching for several seconds before it finally lit! I learned my lesson. Oh, I also learned that alcohol won't light when extremely cold so you should warm it and your stove inside your coat first. That's what overnight adventures are for before going for a week long trip. Buy these matches! I just ordered more since I used another match for coffee.

I bought these in preparation for my first real “primitive” camping experience as an adult. I had been practicing some primitive fire-starting techniques but got these as a solid backup, and boy, am I glad I did. These are good matches and performed very well. I have also used some Coleman “waterproof” camping matches, and those things seemed like toys compared to these. Most of the matches in this kit light the first time, with some requiring up to about 3 strikes. The flame is hot and bright, and lasts for a second or two before reducing a bit to burn the middle of the match. This burns reliably and is usually enough to start the kindling or whatever ablaze. I only needed a single match to start my first campfire! Okay, so there was some smoldering wood left there from the previous camper, but it was still an impressive victory. This is a great buy, not only for the quality of the matches themselves, but for the whole kit. The cotton ball keeps the matches nice and still and is a great backup if you need some dry tinder. The extra strikeplates are awesome and necessary, as I often slid mine out of the slot and into the fire accidentally while striking. This is probably the only flaw with the whole system. The case is awesome. It sees really well, is a comfortable size and weight wherever you put it, and the bright orange color (that I ordered) is super easy to find in a dark back or in a campsite at night. I highly recommend this product for camping!

Works great will buy more in the future

These rock! They are reasonably priced and they perform very well. Matches are a must-have for so many reasons. One of them is emergency preparedness. These UCOs are a great candidate for this Likewise, they are also great for camping, marine usage, and general outdoor activities requiring fire. The overall quality design and reasonable price of the UCO makes this kit suitable for the above and other "mission-critical" applications. The design of case is excellent. A waterproof case is a huge plus for storage. This not only makes the matches waterproof in terms of submersion, but also prevents them from humidity damage. I think protection against humidity damage is even more important, given these products often wind up being stored for years, and how prolonged humidity can make matches useless. The case itself uses a threading that is strong so it does not strip, and is the perfectly sized so that the matches are not crushed but also do not have so much headroom that they can bounce up and down and crack off the starter materials...so these can survive impact really well. The case is textured to get a good grip even when wet or oily, where as an all-smooth case would be very slippery in that scenario. The striker is durable and stands up to the elements -- it also can be changed out when it wears or if it were damaged. Then we get to the matches. These are really good matches and the kind of matches you want if you may find yourself in a situation in which being able to make a fire is the critical element (possibly even the key to survival.) They light easily, they are thick so they resist breaking. They will light in bad weather. And they give you 15+ seconds of a useful flame, which is a plus if you have to light shavings that are not quite dried out or are starting a fire in rain/snow and need a strong and lasting flame. So overall, this an inexpensive tool that could play a key role in wellbeing (and possibly even survival.) Most everyone can benefit from having at least one of these on-hand in the case of an emergency.

11/10 matches that do exactly as they are supposed to. I would love if these came out with a strike anywhere version but they are still awesome the way they are!
