Compare Apples to Apples, and These are a Mountain of Apples
OK, I came back after owning these for a year to say, they are 10 out of five stars. LOL. These remain sharp when the expensive knives need constant sharpening. The large Santoku is fantastic. Every knife gets used frequently. And when we have people over that love to cook, within days, they are grabbing for these. The fact we can wash these in the dishwasher is even more of a win. Best product I have purchased for the kitchen other than my air fryer. I would rank these with some of the best knives I have. ---------------------------- I always love the trolls that review products foolishly. Let's tell everyone these knives aren't as good as the ones that cost $200 a set. They should know because THEY are stupid and we are SOOO smart. LOL. Let's talk apples to apples. These knives come with protective sheaths for less than five bucks a knife. I don't see any single knife similar for this price. None. Even the cheapo knife I got at Walmart which I cannot wash in the dishwasher cost half the price of this entire set. The knives when you open them are appealing. The colors are bright and that is great for identification. The sheaths are great when you grab them out of the drawer and if junior reaches into the drawer when you are not looking. Of course, if he gets off the sheath watch out. These are razor sharp out of the box. I will see how they take stone sharpenings over time. One hint, never use a "knife sharpener" tool. They all are poorly made and damage knives. No matter what the knife, use a standard stone. As far as chipping and the like, well, I haven't had them that long. I expect a cheap knife would show some wear. But so far I have used them for every single day I have had them, and they are great, cutting through everything with ease. Even carving is easy compared to a couple of expensive carving knives I have. Shhh, don't tell the people that bought them for me. The little ones are handy to grab when you need a utility knife. A shorter paring knife would be useful, but hey, five knives for the price is something to talk about. The balance on the knives is a bit off because they are light. The handles are molded acrylic, so they don't have the weight of the full tang knives with the wood handles. Still, the feel is fine. The handles feel great in the hand and the knifes cut on contact, so you don't slip or push off an item that didn't start cutting when you expected it to. Then, being able to throw them in the dishwasher is priceless. They come out shining like new. And if the carbon steel gets a bit rusted, they may not be a showpiece, but they will still likely be the knives you turn to when you need to get the job done quick and leave the cleaning to Maytag. ------------ Update. I would up them to six stars if there was another. I have used these as my primary knives for a year. In and out of the dishwasher, dropped them, etc. and they look like new. Sharpening them with a standard stone works fine and they remain sharp. Bread knife is the best I have ever had. The small knives have proven to be well designed knives for cutting vegetables or other cases in which a paring knife works. The yellow knife has a slight serration that makes it perfect for tomatoes. Love the large santoku, because its size makes it balanced with the handle, and because it is sharp and ready and goes into the dishwasher. It has taken the place of knives costing over $100. I am not kidding. I use it more often. The only knife I have now that is not in this set that I use frequently is a chopping knife that works well for vegetables (carrots, potatoes, etc). The type shaped like a hatchet or meat cleaver and used at Japanese restaurants. I have seen these knives called various things, but essentially, they are thin bladed vegetable knives. If this set had one added, it would be complete.

Great value, super sharp!
So far these knives are awesome. A FAR cry from the knives I've been using. These are extremely sharp right out of the package. Mincing and chopping harder ingredients takes much less effort, which makes prep less time consuming, which is awesome. I know they say they are dishwasher safe, however, in my research of hard anodized (all my Calphalon cookware is hard anodized and when I got them I did extensive research so I wouldn't inadvertently ruin them) I've come to find that hand washing keeps the cookware and tools in better shape. It primarily has to do with the ph and alkalinity of dishwasher soap (which is much higher than regular dish soap), combined with the longer exposure to high temp water. Hard anodized IS still a "film" and the alkalinity attacks the film (which can also lead to effecting the stability of the metal itself), not to mention the potential of getting banged around by the pressure of the water as well as other utensils, dishes etc. and since they are relatively lightweight in comparison to many other knives, this seems more likely. Also, they should not be submerged in water for a long period of time. This will cause them to dull more quickly and potentially rust. The coating on these knives is basically non-stick and it doesn't take much to wash them with a sponge. It seriously only takes a few seconds. For roughly $30 this is a fabulous set of knives. I'm extremely impressed with them and am really glad I decided to try them out instead of spending $200 on a set. Also, the guards are really handy. I don't have to worry about digging around in the drawer and cutting myself or the blades getting knocked around and becoming dulled.

Get these now.
These knives are fantastic. We are old school knife people-Chicago Cutlery in the 90s, Henckel and Wusthof, you know. We sharpen the knives religiously, oil the handles, we’re dorks. Last year a coworker retired and this big old Santoku was sitting by the cake. I Went clean through the cardboard cake container and was only my way to split the table :-) Super sharp AND cute. Came home and ordered a set. We love them, the boys (8 and 9) use them nicely with supervisons, it’s great. Since then, every time someone compliments the knives (we do dinners with friends and the kitchen is open season) we give them away AND replace them. Most recently we took this to scout camp and the cooks were jealous. The knives are great to use, easy to find, and the guards make them wonderful for scouting weekends. If you’re a regular human, you’ll love these. If you’re a bit of a foodie, you’ll love these. If you are incapable of loving rainbow knives I can’t help you but give these a try, be happy.

These are the knives you're looking for
My husband and I needed a new knife set but we didn't want to break the bank. I cook ALOT and I love the idea of buying a set of Wusthof knives but, lets be honest, who can really afford those knives? Anyway, I had the following criteria when I was looking for knives: 1) They need to be sharp because I cook at least three meals a day 2) They need to be relatively cheap. This set surprised me. I managed to buy these for roughly $35 (the price fluctuates and I bought them at the right time). Relatively cheap - check. I took them out of the packaging when they arrived and as I was washing them, I cut myself (complete accident). Sharp - check. These knives do not boast a fancy name and they're not made from german steel but they have exceeded my expectations. The colors are fun to incorporate in to my kitchen theme; they have performed well during the prep of every meal (cutting everything from herbs to fruit and veggies to meat); best of all, they were inexpensive. I would highly recommend this set of knives. Update: I have been using these knives for a little over three months. They have not rusted (like many others complained about), they're still sharp, and I still love them. Please, be nice to your knives - hand wash them and store them in their sleeves.

This is a great set for new cooks!
I purchased this set for my husband's birthday. He is just now getting into cooking. This is his step-up set of knives. The blades come extremely sharp and hold an edge very well. They are a good weight and balance for a mid to large hand. I myself have very small hands and found them somewhat cumbersome to hold. Unusual feature that earned it one extra star: My husband loves that he can find the knives. He said my carbon steel and black handles knives just disappear against out countertop and other stainless steel appliances. He said he loves that these stand out to him while cooking.

The knives look great, I love the whole rainbow color and it ...
I bought these knives a little less than 6 months ago. These knives were extremely sharp when they first arrived. So sharp, in fact, that one day I was cooking and wasn't paying attention, I accidentally sliced off a piece of my fingertip, the knife did it with no effort whatsoever. Needless to say please be careful with them. The knives look great, I love the whole rainbow color and it actually looks as bright as the picture shown. I only have two issues with these knives, first, the covers that come with them do not allow the knives to magnetically attach to a magnetic wall bar which for me renders the covers useless since I hang all my knives on my wall bar. On the plus side this does show off the knives color which is nice. Secondly the chefs knife (green one), is not sharp anymore and the orange knife is also losing its edge. Just bought a knife sharpener so I hope they become good as new. I don't have a dishwasher so I can't tell you whether or not these knives can take it, but just a quick wash and dry does the trick for me. Overall I highly recommend these knives, each one of them works wonderfully and asides from those complaints, I think these are great knives for anyone who cooks 3-4 times a week.

Nice knives for the average cook.
I am not a knife connoisseur. I do not own expensive knives. However, I can tell you I owned some crappy ones. These are sharp and cut well. I like that they have matching covers, so can put them in a drawer if you wish without fear. I feel like these are upper-middle quality knives. You don't realize how bad your knives are until you get nice ones. I was lucky enough to find some in the Amazon Warehouse, so I didn't have to pay too much for these. If you take care of them, like washing them when done using them, these should last you quite some time. I haven't put these in the dishwasher, but I do have a knife of the same brand and similar style (an orange Hampton Forge Tomodachi knife with a regular colored blade), which has gone through the dishwasher fine. I am sorry to hear of other users' issues with blades becoming rusted/chipped, but these do say that they come with a 25 year warranty, so I felt comfortable purchasing them. If I find I have issues, I will definitely be contacting the company and will change my review to reflect any problems that come along. I purchased these in February, so only time will tell.

Best set of knives I’ve ever owned
Best set of knives I’ve ever owned. They have never dulled on me yet. I’ve seen others say they needed sharpened in 4 or 5 months. I’m not sure what they are using them for, but I use mine for what they are intended for and haven’t sharpened them in 4 1/2 years. I’m definitely labeled a chef and these knives are the only ones I use. I have three sets of these knives in case something was to happen to the set I have. If you wash them and let them sit without drying yes, you will get rust on them. Who would let a good knife sit with water on them or leave them in a wet sink? That would be someone who doesn’t like to do dishes. Any cook or chef will clean and dry their knives when finished with them. There’s no complaints on these knives with me. They are well worth the money and cut like butter. If you’re looking for reviews to make your decision you’re wasting your time on ALL the negatives. I highly recommend these knives!

Great knife set
This tomodachi line of knives from Hampton Forge is the best. They are all very sharp and all come with protective blades which make for safe storing and also easy to transport to a potluck for cake cutting, etc. This multi coloured set looks beautiful as well.
