Is this set appropriate for children?

Hi Christina,Although the product is not manufactured as a children's product, thematically the words are appropriate for children!

Are these pretty strong magnets? would they still stick in the presence of lots of fine dust/dirt?

No, I doubt it. They are strong enough to not come off the fridge when you open and close the doors but not so strong that you have trouble sliding them around or taking them off. They won't hold on a thin sheet of paper unless maybe you made a border around the entire paper. And I think they said to wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol before using to have the strongest hold.
