Review: Useful Tool that is so cool!! Perfect for science nerds - I have been wanting one of these for a long time. I don't know why I just now broke down a bought one. DON'T bother with the CD or any software. This is where the negative reviews come from. It works as a webcam. I acutally don't trust any of the CD's I get with Chinese products. I found that there are two points at which it will focus at a given distance. for flat stuff, just hold the camera against it. Otherwise, use the stand. Do not try to hold your hand steady. You'll get frustrated. The detail you can see is amazing. On my laptop, I get that the 0.1mm grids of the calibration card are 20mm wide on my screen. That's 200x. I never expected to actually get 800x, but technically you could if you zoom into part of the picture. I've included some pictures of the calibration card, pencil on paper, a hire folicle, and the weave of my shirt. Each has a couple different zoom levels to give you an idea of what you will be able to see. It's pretty crazy for how little this thing costs. All photos were taken with the build in windows web cam software. Review: It does have high magnification. - But when you do use that feature, the device is going to be really close to what you are looking at, as in I don't think it is possible to solder surface mounted chips to a circuit board. Do not think that you focus on what you want and then zoom in, the optics just do not work that way. You will need to focus, magnify, and set the distance of the device to whatever you are looking at, at the same time. I bought another mounting stand for this device at Adafruit, and although the stand cost more that the scope, it was worth ever penny so you are not tilting the magnifier at tiny objects and you can back far away if you just need low magnification on something larger. The software is what you would expect for something in this price range, but it does work on Windows 10.

Nice for the sale price - quick Seriall Number reader and recorder.
This is a great little microscope. I use it to view serial numbers off of other electronics that are to small to see. The microscope comes with a stand, cd for your drivers and calibration ruler. I easily installed the drivers and software on my windows 10 desktop, it took about 5 minutes. ( Yes it worked on windows 10 platform) The microscope magnifies 20x-800x(manual) and is quite clear. I like the snapshot function in which you can capture pictures and videos and save them on your computer. You just plug in the microscope into your USB port and open the app and your ready to go. It is not difficult to use. Not real impressed with the stand, light weight, but I can work around it. The microscope has a light on it and the a magnification button change . Its lightweight, easy to use doesn't take up much move. I recommend it for the sale price. I bought this out right and I use it in my lab.

Absolutely amazing for the money. Buy it as a toy! Accidentally use it for serious?
It's not perfect. The stand is lightweight and has to be set fairly tight to hold it's position, but once it's tight it moves a little 'sticky' so it can be tricky to do small adjustments. Perhaps a little oil or some other modifications could help with that part. It also shakes easily at high zoom, because the base isn't perfectly stiff, which doesn't help. It may be useful to have some previous experience a highly zoomed camera/spotting scope/telescope and a tripod. But OMG, this is the future; when twenty-odd dollars is all it takes to get a self-lit macro camera. This thing can zoom in so far that you see huge individual paint splotches when you look at printed materials. At it's lowest zoom, it's pretty easy to get great shots of small things. At high zoom, the image is so incredibly magnified that it becomes somewhat difficult to make any focus or alignment adjustments without overshooting and losing track of the target. A homemade stand which was more stable would render this 'scope an incredible piece of equipment. I think with a heavy frame, one could do focus stacking with this, to get deeper depth of field. (google focus stacking? haha). It will probably never win any 'microscope photo' contests; the images are kinda lacking contrast, or something, which makes them a little flat. But again - think of this as a useful tool for seeing closely in real-time, for a few dollars, and it's simply unbelievable. Pros: -Wide range of zoom -Unbelievable max zoom -Comes with an adjustable stand -Built-in ring light around the sensor, adjustable brightness -Costs what, 2 six-packs of micro? Cons: -Personally I am happy that they chose to include an inexpensive stand which kept the cost down. I can only see the inexpensive stand as a con, if someone expected to use it like a highly priced piece of scientific equipment straight out of the box. -Not super high resolution -Doesn't feed my cats -Image is not as 'pretty' as it could be

Cheap device...you get what you pay for
This is really a cheap device. You have to turn the focus dial by hand..and that is mounted on the device itself...you can image how difficult it is to get something in focus only to loose it because you touched the device or let go of the device. It's almost impossible to get something in focus for more that a split second before loosing it. It took me a half an hour just to get a toothpick lined up in the right position with the lens. Then I had to move the toothpick and start all over again. What a cheap device!

Try elsewhere.
Included CD includes drivers for the device and an app called "Measurement". Measurement doesn't work in Windows 10 64-bit, throwing an error at launch. The drivers aren't used - Windows identifies the device as a "Lenovo EasyCamera" and installs these drivers, which will work with OTHER apps (like VLC). Unfortunately, at least my example came with the camera sensor installed upside down in the microscope body. I have to install the device in the stand with the adjustment knob completely blocked by the support arm. Very poor quality control - obviously in need of poka-yoke. Other notes: * True resolution is 640x480. Any other resolution is a software enhancement, and these are never an improvement. * This device is way too large to ever consider using as an endoscope, obviously. * Focus adjustment knob is very difficult to turn. It's too smooth and has a lot of friction. I have rather strong hands - if you don't, you'll hate this.

Best deal for only $18
I purchase this exact set for only $17.90, for which price I have to give it 5 stars. Everything works as advertized. I do not find its quality low at all, both in its construction and in its optical output. i'm using windows 10 and it works just fine. The installing is straight forward and it worked first try. One commenter wrote that it had only 2 focal points, 20 and 800. That's not true at all. On the contrary, it seems infinitely adjustable between the 20x and the 800x, the variable being the distance between the object and the lens. Some also complain about the disc being all in Chinese, and that it is loaded with malware. For this unit anyway, both are false. Some also say that the two side buttons "snap" and "zoom" don't work. They do; you'll just have to press the buttons firmly for a second or two. I find the snap button especially useful, since the best way to use the scope at max magnification is to hold it with my right hand and press the object against the end of the scope with my left, and when the picture comes into sharp focus, then press the Snap button with my right thumb. I love it so much I will order a few more, especially ones with different powers.

functional and inexpensive
Works good enough to read part numers on capacitors, diodes, and IC's. The stand is a hassle and adjusting focus requires practice before you can avoid moving the whole unit. Not the worlds best digital microscope but it works. Since I normally have my laptop open when working with electronics it worked fine for me. You can capture pictures and video but don't expect quality to hold up on a 50 inch screen. It's functional to insert into powerpoint or as a reference when discussing something with another person.

Usb scope
A very cool USB microscope. A bit tricky to get used to but once you figure it out it works amazingly giving you extreme microscopic views of what ever you use it for.
