Sarah, left alone for a few weeks because her parents have to attend to a family matter, discovered a seriously injured man just a little ways from her house. Doing what it took to save the man's life cost her dearly : her reputation, her standing in the community and the church, her family, and an unborn child. This book really shows the end results of jumping to conclusions, being self-righteous and unwilling to listen to reason, pride (of any sort), gossip, and jealousy. It also reveals the dangers of not reading God's Word for one's self and relying strictly on the words of someone else to find out what God said about sin and forgiveness. I would most definitely recommend that this book be read by older teens and adults alike because of the lessons in it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great story! *by M***R on Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2015* This story takes place in England in the 1800's (I believe). It's a time when rules in the church are rather harsh and unforgiving. Conclusions are drawn and never questioned. In this case, Sarah's parents go to see her mother's dying father and leaves her alone. She finds an injured man and brings him back to her home to care for him. Before all is said and done, she is accused of fornication and thrown out of the church.I liked the book. A LOT. But I never could get over the father. I think he got off way too easily seeing as how he loved his daughter and didn't believe a word she said - took the word of a immoral man over his own daughter...that rubbed me the wrong way.This book mixed suspense and romance together along with history of the church of England and other churches moving in that were more forgiving. I really enjoyed the mix.I did think the story ended rather abruptly, though... ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Historical Romance *by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2013* The story takes place in the early 1800's and shows how religious zealots can take over the life and love of individuals. Moreover, it demonstrates how the "love of money" can lead to actions which are detrimental and dangerous.Sarah Montgomery and Alan Mellington became friends as the result of Sarah saving his life. Unfortunately, the neighbors misinterpreted the interaction between the two which led to the disavowment and shunning of Sarah by her church and others in the village. The libelous gossip was further perpetuated by Alan's brother Simon as a act of revenge. In an effort to correct the situation, Alan decides to marry Sarah which leads to many other difficulties as well as rewards. The mystery which permeates the entire book is finding out who is attempting to kill Alan and his brother Simon.This is a mystery and romantic tale without all of the sexual detail which seems to be prevalent in novels today.
