Jennifer Nielsen does a great job of creating fiery characters who almost immediately find themselves in trouble up to their eyeballs. The Traitor's Game is no different. But this story follows the fortunes and misfortunes of two main characters, Kestra, the daughter of a very powerful man in the country of Antora's government, and Simon, a member of the resistance group called the Coracks. After three years in exile, Kestra is on her way home when she and her entourage are waylay-ed. With her servants' lives on the line, Kestra is forced into agreeing to help the Coracks retrieve a magical item supposedly hidden at her home of Woodcourt. Simon and a girl named Trina are sent with Kestra to ensure that she follows orders. But Kestra has plans of her own and they don't involve helping traitors and betraying her own family. But as so often happens the plans of Kestra, Simon, and Trina don't go off without a hitch. The tension between Kestra and Trina threatens to derail all their plans and Simon's feelings about the girl he used to know aren't all hatred. The point of view switches between Kestra and Simon, giving the reader a glimpse into the mind and heart of each as they struggle to accomplish their objectives. The tension between Simon and Kestra goes back and forth between attraction and loyalty to their respective causes. But as Kestra faces her father again and even Lord Endrick, the evil ruler the Coracks are sworn to destroy, she starts learning things that shake her faith in the life she's always known. Finding the Olden Blade, which offers the only hope of defeating Lord Endrick, offers Kestra a chance of rescuing her servants and helping her country. But both Kestra and Simon are walking a very fine line between loyalty and betrayal. Is there any way out of this mess that leaves them both alive? Nielsen has written an action-packed, thriller of a novel. Kestra and Simon are both sympathetic characters that I found myself caring about, even though they are on different sides as the story begins. But the author does a fantastic job of writing a compelling story that I read quickly with lots of twists and turns. There are hints about where the story is going to go but interestingly, the characters know more about certain things than the reader, which makes the reveals all the more of a shock. I can't wait to read the next book! Note: There is some violence in the book because of the nature of the story (revolution). There is also some kissing.

He never dreamed he might one day have to protect the person he hated most in the world. Jennifer Nielsen went so far above and beyond with this first book in her new series. Her world and characters stand out - corrupting magic, remarkable and deadly creatures and weapons, an alluring myth, exciting and treacherous and conniving friends and foes. The plot is electrifying and jam-packed with harrowing chases, lethal assaults, intricate plans, difficult choices, shaky alliances, unanticipated outcomes, devastating losses. The pace is fast, the writing suspenseful and engaging and detailed, and the ending worth every nail-biting moment leading up to it. If you like your heroines fierce, your heroes protective, their loyalties divided, their missions complex, their motivations hidden, their lives full of secrets, THE TRAITOR’S GAME is an absolute must.

I have read a LOT of Jennifer A Neilsen’s books; like I am a huge fan!! I read my first book by her at Christmas, when I got the whole Ascendence Series which I LOVED. I also read the Mark of the Thief series—my favorite of her books—and LOVED IT SO MUCH. I’m obsessed with fantasy. I also read some of her historical fictions this year including Resistance, Words on Fire and Iceberg. They were all 👌!! So when I saw the Traitors Game—I initially thot it was too old for me bc I’m 14, but I found that it suited my age quite well. I decided to buy it and it arrived the next day in perfect condition!! I really think the characters are fun and thought out. I loved Kestra as a main character and found her to be just as feisty as Mrs. Nielsen’s other MCs which I thought was funny. I would say—if they all lived in the same world—that Jaron Eckbert, from the Ascendence Series, and Nic Calva from Mark of the Thief and Kestra Dallisor from this book would all be related. They all have the same base personality. Anyways, I liked the slightly more main plot romance between Simon and Kestra and liked the haters to lovers relationship. It was well down to show their reasons for hating each other, while showing their undeniable attraction for each other at the same time. I thought the plot was a little weak and didn’t give a lot of room for creativity to blossom in a mansion that was rarely explored except Kestra’s room and the Library. I felt like it could have been better given more attention to the plot but still a nice read. Recommend for clean, sub romance plot fantasy. Izrael. 💖

dude these books are TOO GOOD

This book is a real page turner!!!! All of Jen Nielsen’s books are… I’ve bought many of her books to give as gifts… I’m so proud that she is such a marvelous success. Yet… as successful as she is…Jen is as down to earth, as fun and as “real” as she was when I met her 23 years ago. When her father and I got married, blending our family.

This book was....fine. The plot line was....fine, in terms of general bad guy rules and how to get the good guys to win storyline but the character development was rushed. I get wanting your characters to be mysterious and have all these reveals but there had to be more growth of letting the reader develop a better relationship with them. Also personally, I get annoyed at “oh it’s 4 days and I love you now.” Really?? Days?? We could have at least made it a week. That I could try and believe. Basically, the idea and general outline of plot, characters and characters roles were intriguing but how all the gaps were filled in were rushed and needed to be drawn out so I could actually feel for the characters. So it was fine.

The Traitor’s Game by Jennifer A. Nielsen starts a new fantasy series full of action and a feisty main character! Kestra has been away from her father and kingdom for the last three years. Her father sent her away for her safety after she had been kidnapped. She’s traveling back to her father, along with her servants, when their metal carriage is attacked and Kestra is kidnapped again. This time the kidnappers want her to become a traitor and find the Olden Blade; the blade is the only way to kill the evil and immortal ruler of the kingdom, Lord Endrick. Kestra is a handful. One of her kidnappers, Simon, is an old acquaintance from her childhood and the two of them have animosity between them. Kestra feels unloved by her father because of how callously he treats her and how easily he sacrifices her. Kestra’s attitude is funny at times and maddening to the other characters most of the time. Action, suspense, twists and originality, with a nod or two towards J. R. R. Tolkien, make The Traitor’s Game a 5 star read!

This book was a surprise. Found it on Amazon, liked the cover, title and blurb, so I went and bought it. Haven't intended on starting reading it immediately. But I did. And I was hooked. Kestra is the daughter of a hated man. At first, she too is a bit on the insufferable side - there were times I liked her, but also disliked her. However, she changes throughout the story, and, when reaching the end of the book, you can't believe it's the same character. Simon. Oh, Simon! He's on the other side of the on-going battle. Is it the good side, while Kestra's on the bad one? No one can tell, really. Okay, so maybe Kestra's side is a definite bad, but Simon's side isn't all pink and rainbows and unicorns. As the story evolves, there's twist after twist, one intrigue after another. Secrets are revealed, certain truths surfacing. You have hunches and sometimes, they come true, other times they don't. While it did end on a cliffhanger, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be - yes, I, who hated cliffhangers (still not a fan), have come across so many type of cliffhangers since switching to YA fantasy that this one didn't bother me. Plus, book two comes out in March, so there is that. Battles, kidnappings, bad guys, good guys - or relative good guys, a feisty heroine and swoon-worthy hero. There's magic too. And annoying side characters. But it's a good one and I can't wait to see what happens next! 4.5 stars.

omg love this book

Our family enjoys stories by Jennifer A. Nielsen. We started with The False Prince stories and then found this one. Another entertaining adventure! We'll be purchasing the others in this series too.

A epic journey, a missing dagger, an evil ruler, and a love story all in one book. Nielsen draws you in with a story that is hard to put down and leaves you begging for a sequel.

I enjoyed it! Interesting story line, lots of plot twists and turns which were occassionally more convoluted and circular than necessary but built tension well! A little predictable at the end but a good read throughout. Looking forward to the next book and the universe develoling further!

We’ve enjoyed Jennifer Nielsen’s books before and this was great too! Gift for Christmas and we were happy with it !
