This sound level meter meets ANSI, and IEC Type 2 standards and features dual range measurement, fast & slow time weighting, data/max hold functions and a tripod mount for long-term monitoring. Review: A Well Designed and Well Made Sound Level Meter - I purchased this product to adjust the sound levels from each of the speakers in my 7.1 surround sound system. The meter is very well made, easy to use, and gave reproducible results when measuring the output of all of my speakers. I liked the fact that the meter could be used in both A and C modes as the latter is required when measuring the output of speakers in a surround system. I had previously tried a less expensive sound level meter that had arrived dead on arrival. The Reed R8050 worked immediately upon removal from the box and insertion of batteries. This is clearly a case of you get wha you pay for. Highly recommended.

**Q: Frequency range?**
A: Selectable A/C weighting (When the weighting switch is set to A, the meter primarily measures frequencies in the 500 to 10000 Hz range, which is the area of greatest sensitivity to the human ear. When set to C weighting, themeter measures uniformly over the frequency range of 32 to 10000 Hz, giving an overall sound level indication.)

**Q: I need an inexpensive type 2, a scale (ansi apprto measure inside my house of outdoor muffler on truck. one that will hold data.  recommendations?**
A: The Reed R8080 is a data-logging sound level meter.

**Q: Is R8050 Calibrated when I purchase it?**

Please note that this item is not calibrated. The calibrated p/n is R8050-NIST.

**Q: If i buy the version without nist certificate, does it mean i have to calibrate the unit myself before use?**
A: The manufacturer (Reed Instruments) recommends that the meter be calibrated after any extended time without using it or if it is used in extreme conditions.  It is recommended that you purchase the R8090 calibrator in addition to the sound level meter to perform the calibration.  Even if you purchase the version that includes the calibration certificate you would still need to perform your own calibration regularly to achieve accurate results.

### ⭐⭐⭐ Okay for Some Types of Sound/Noise

It works for measuring long duration sound intensity, such as machinery noise, motor hum, etc.. The readings on short duration, high intensity sounds such as gun shots, popping relief valves, etc. are so erratic that I am not confident I'm getting an accurate reading. It was advertised as suitable for this type of sound, but I'm not convinced.
