Pro-Ject Audio - Phono Box MM - MM Phono Pre-amplifier - Black

I've been slowly upgrading my vinyl setup over two years. I started with a mediocre at best Pyle Pro turntable and preamp. I got rid of it when I realized I couldn't turn the volume up anywhere near a satisfying level without starting a feedback loop. I upgraded to an ATLP120 which is still going strong. I used the built in preamp for a time, but when I upgraded to an Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge, the sound was awful. So I did the deed and took the preamp out. For the last year or so I was using the Pyle Pro preamp with the straight output from the cartridge. At this point the mains power to the turntable powered only the platter. The cartridge output went straight to the preamp. The sound was acceptable and decent, until it got really crackly sometimes. It was not due to the records being played because they sometimes sounded fine, and other times they did not. I decided it was time to upgrade to a MM specific preamp. I mostly just wanted the cutting in and out to stop, and I wanted the volume considerably loud without the increasingly annoying hiss I was noticing. I also suspected that the left channel was being slightly favored. My suspicions were confirmed when I hooked this ProJect Preamp up. Not only did it eliminate the aforementioned issues, but it improved on the sound in a way I could not have imagined!! I can't wait to go back through my Genesis and Floyd albums with this thing. Fantastic on speakers and headphones!!! Worth every penny!

It’s Killer! High Quality! I wanted a Pro-Ject, so purchased one! A little pricey, but I knew that prior! btw, it’s pronounced: Pro-Ject, not Project! Too, if you have “moving coil,” this is only for moving magnetic..! Peace

I couldn't review this for a while because at the time of purchase, it didn't work with my setup. Apparently my cheap-o weak turntable already had a preamp built in. I just upgraded to the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon, which requires an external preamp, and now it's put to good use. I love it. Obviously it's a bit difficult to isolate what the preamp specifically brings to the table, because to use it, I introduced a higher end TT. But I will say this: with my old TT I kept the stylus clean, and cleaned my records, so even though it was chincy, I had little to no surface noise. BUT the sound felt weak, not present. Almost flat and far away. Cranking up the volume helped. With my current setup: pioneer receiver, Bose pseudo-vintage pedistal speakers, the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon TT, and this Phono MM Preamp, I have no complaints. The clarity is insane, the presence, depth and warmth are all there. In buying just these two pieces (turntable and preamp), it's like I replaced my whole stereo setup. For the price, I really don't think you'll find a better preamp. It's very solid, metal and has weight to it, so it's not delicate. It could sustain a drop. The sound quality is great: I get no signal noise whatsoever. I love this brand, and would recommend them to anyone. And in all honesty, I almost cheaped out and bought a preamp for half the price (albeit with another brand I do like), but I'm glad I didn't. I'll be happy with my current setup for a while.

Works well and does its job. Amplifies a MM signal and connects to line-level inputs on a audio preamplifier. Rugged steel enclosure and ground connection that allows you to ground your turntable to the signal ground connections. Disappointing to find TL071 opamps compared to one with better performance like the NE5532.

I listen to mostly "classical" LPs on a mostly vintage stereo system (circa '89 Thorens TT, Signet tonearm, Magnepan speakers, Hafler amp, cartridge meticulously aligned). The weak link is a lovely 50-year-old McIntosh preamp (mine has a flaky phono stage - left channel dozes off intermittently, bit of hum). Enter the Pro-ject Phono Box MM costing less than the repair shop charged me to open up my preamp and tell me that they can't service it. This sturdy metal box, no larger than it needs to be, no annoying lights, no switches, dials, or options, melted into my system and lifted the sound to wear it can be. An unexpected bonus was that record surface noise, already quite low, went completely black (wow). Thrilled over here. 5 stars.

I wanted to try this unit because I was getting a major hum from a more expense preamp. This little thing blew me away at this price point. For a starter table like a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon, I can't imagine doing any better below $100. It has good volume, good sound stage and good bass. I had order the Shiit Mani 2 and it was a better match for my needs, but it's also twice the price. But honestly the sound difference was not huge. Totally recommended for me for it's cost.

I bought a Pro-Ject turntable,the Carbon 2M, so this is like a match made in heaven. It was crazy easy to set up (plug and play pretty much) and it immediately corrected audio issues as well as gave me the power of sound that having a turntable requires. This was an afterthought for me as I had purchased a nice player and a nice sound system only to realize I forgot you needed a preamp to make it all sound great and loud. This is the most satisfying purchase i've made in years because of how easy it is to use and effective it is.

I originally purchased the economical Pyle PP999 Phono Turntable Pre-amplifier from Amazon which sounded quite nice with my Pro-ject Essential II turntable when plugged into my Yamaha receiver with output through my Klipsch speakers. I wanted to see if there appeared to be any difference in sound quality using the Pro-ject Phono Box preamplifier. I could not set this test up as a double blind sort of study, but the Pro-ject preamp did seem to make the sound a bit crisper than with the cheaper pre-amp. Thus, I would recommend the Pro-ject preamp, especially if it ever goes on sale again for $80 as it did when I bought it from Amazon. On the other hand, many of you would still probably be satisfied with the $12 Pyle pre-amp as being able to do a decent job for a much cheaper price.

Aún no lo he usado muchas horas y por tanto no puedo decir nada sobre su durabilidad, pero yo soy de los que desconectan la alimentación con el interruptor de la regleta y supongo que eso ayudará en ese aspecto. La calidad del sonido es excelente con mi cápsula MM y el ruido de fondo es ridículamente bajo. Apenas es perceptible con el volumen del amplificador a 70, hay que estar en completo silencio para notar cuando pones/quitas el mute. Algunas personas se han quejado de mucho ruido de fondo o de que al tiempo de instalarlo a aumentado mucho. Hay que recordar que la señal phono es analógica, de MUY bajo nivel y de alta impedancia, eso obliga a que necesite mucha amplificación para equiparar su nivel con el de la salida de linea y la hace muy sensible a cualquier ruido eléctrico aunque se conecte correctamente la toma de tierra entre el tocadiscos y el preamplificador. Por eso es muy importante como se colocan los cables para eliminar o reducir al máximo ese ruido, alejando todo lo posible el cable phono y la entrada del preamplificador de los cables de alimentación. En mi caso concreto, partiendo de un plato de más de 40 años, le he añadido este preamplificador y un emisor bluetooth 5.3 para poderlo usar sin que esté cerca del equipo de sonido. He montado todo en la parte trasera del plato. Hice una primera prueba para distribuirlos junto con una regleta en la posición que me resultaba más cómoda para encender/apagar las tres cosas. Con esa distribución tenía un ruido de fondo enorme, totalmente inasumible. Cambié la distribución para que coincidiera el cable de salida del plato con la entrada del preamplificador, enrollé y sujete el cable a su lado. En el otro extremo puse la regleta junto a la toma de corriente del plato, y en medio el emisor. Todos los cables recogidos y sujetos para que no se puedan mover y produzcan zumbidos indeseados. El zumbido desapareció y ahora puedo escuchar mis viejos vinilos con el plato en un lugar más cómodo, práctico y sin perder calidad de sonido.

Premetto che non sono un audiofilo, ma ho un orecchio molto attento e allenato. Mi serviva un pre-amplificatore per giradischi (phono stage) per scollegare dal suo amplificatore il mio piatto AKAI AP-206C della fine degli anni '70, con nuova testina e stilo Audio technica AT-VM95E (di tipo MM), e collegarlo a un impianto separato. Le recensioni online del prodotto e i test di ascolto erano buoni, ma le misurazioni strumentali degli audiofili dipingevano un quadro disastroso, ad eccezione dell'ottima fedeltà RIAA (spiego dopo, per chi non sa cosa sia). Non avendo intenzione di spendere molto e fidandomi della qualità del brand Pro-Ject, ho voluto provare ugualmente, già pronto a fare un reso. E invece ho fatto bene, perché posso dire che l'ascolto fornito da questo pre-ampli phono è proprio ottimo. Ho ascoltato con cuffie molto neutre come risposta audio (quindi bypassando eventuali alterazioni dovute alle casse) e sono rimasto sbalordito: l'ascolto del vinile era estremamente più bilanciato di quanto fosse con l'ascolto con le stesse cuffie ma passando dall'impianto originale. Sembrava un altro mastering, un'altra edizione del disc, decisamente più equilibrata e definita. FEDELTA' AUDIO: L'equalizzazione dell'amplificatore a cui ho collegato il Phono BOX MM l'ho potuta lasciare a zero, neutra, perché già così sia i bassi che gli acuti erano ben bilanciati. Bassi mai troppo carichi, acuti mai fastidiosi, violenti o troppo sibilanti. Ho immediatamente percepito tutta la qualità del mio giradischi AKAI originale e dalla puntina, perché questo pre-ampli evidenzia in modo chiaro e trasparente tutti i dettagli che il giradischi produce. Poi, si percepisce distintamente che l'uscita è quella che probabilmente era la registrazione originale, perché si sentono dettagli nascosti tra la musica e la voce, alcuni dei quali non avevo mai notato prima. Troppo "giusti" in termini di collocazione nel brano per non essere quelli previsti in origine. Il merito di ciò sta indubbiamente nella fedeltà alla curva RIAA, che anche i siti più critici elogiano e che pare essere una delle eccellenze di questo modello. Per chi non lo sapesse, la curva RIAA è una sorta di "compressione" dell'audio originale che viene fatta da chi produce il disco, per far sì che quell'audio possa stare tra i solchi di un vinile (la faccio breve). Come conseguenza, nei solchi non è memorizzato l'audio originale ma una sua versione trasformata. Un pre-amplificatore phono ha il compito di fare il processo al contrario, quindi prendere la versione trasformata e ricreare l'audio originale. E un buon pre-amplificatore fa questo in modo molto fedele, restituendo l'audio quasi così come è arrivato in sala di incisione. Beh, in questo il Pro-ject Phono Box MM eccelle e per me questo è ciò che più conta nell'ascolto di un LP: essere certo che ciò che arriva al mio impianto di diffusione sia il più possibile ciò che è stato registrato in origine. E QUINDI, I TEST ONLINE??? A mio avviso, tutti i calcoli e le misure sull'headroom e sulle distorsioni (con conseguenti critiche) sono rispettabili e senza dubbio autorevoli, ma sono anche paranoie eccessive, sia perché sono aspetti molto microscopici che forse si notano nei vinili di test ma non nell'ascolto musicale, sia perché sono talmente sottili come livello di perfezionismo che sono influenzati poi da mille altri aspetti come l'alimentazione elettrica, le vibrazioni nella stanza etc. Quindi, a mio avviso, non sono cose che interessano a un ascoltatore di vinile esigente, ma "normale" e che non abbia una sala d'ascolto dedicata con impianti e strutture da decine di migliaia di euro. Invece, la fedeltà all'originale è qualcosa che emerge - e anche tanto - per chiunque abbia un buon giradischi e un buon orecchio. Per dirla semplice: se avete una stanza HIFI con apparecchiature e strutture acustiche da parecchie migliaia di euro, magari potete anche preoccuparvi delle sfumature espresse dai grafici e dalle misure strumentali, ma se avete un buon impianto "da persone normali", badate più che altro al fatto che questo pre-ampli rispetto a molti altri modelli della sua fascia di prezzo (e non solo) "suona più fedele", tanto il resto non sarebbe comunque sotto il vostro controllo. RUMORI DEL VINILE: Devo anche dire che le misurazioni dei test online evidenziavano la predisposizione di questo pre-ampli a enfatizzare i difetti del vinile (click, pop, etc.), ma questa cosa io non l'ho notata, anzi i difetti mi sono sembrati persino smorzati nell'ascolto in cuffie con questo pre-ampli rispetto a quello dalle casse con l'impianto originale (dovrebbe essere il contrario). Non posso dire che il Phono Box MM faccia un buon lavoro di correzione, perché non ne ho evidenza, ma di sicuro mi sembra che non amplifichi nessun difetto. Se il vinile è ben tenuto, i difetti impliciti nel vinile sono assolutamente sopportabili. CONCLUSIONE: Prodotto che, nonostante le misurazioni contrarie di alcuni audiofili, genera un audio molto buono e parecchio fedele all'incisione originale, quindi fedele a come era previsto che il brano suonasse. L'equalizzazione è bilanciata e si apprezzano tutte le differenze di incisione tra album anche degli stessi autori, nonché tutte le caratterizzazioni strumentali e vocali e le scelte fatte in fase di postproduzione dai tecnici del suono. Anche con generi impegnativi come l'heavy metal graffiante degli anni '80, oltre che con ascolti più acustici e caldi. Se avete un buon orecchio e non vi preoccupate troppo di numeri e grafici, sarete soddisfatti. Oltretutto affrontando un prezzo decisamente ragionevole. Considerate che il pre-ampli è dove il suono del vostro giradischi viene realmente "prodotto" e quindi conviene fare una buona scelta, non spendere troppo ma neanche troppo poco. È nel pre-ampli e nella testina del giradischi che "la magia" accade: insistete su queste parti, in giusta misura, il resto potete sempre cambiarlo nel tempo e in base ai gusti. NOTA FINALE IMPORTANTE: attenzione che questo è un pre-ampli phono, quindi è esclusivamente pensato per amplificare il segnale che arriva dritto dritto dal giradischi non amplificato (con puntine di tipo MM). Ogni uso diverso, ad esempio per amplificare altri dispositivi, inevitabilmente porterà a risultati non ottimali o addirittura inadeguati. Per la stessa ragione, questo dispositivo non ha funzioni aggiuntive come manopole del volume, equalizzatori etc. Il suo compito è prendere il debole segnale della testina del giradischi e amplificarlo a livelli di linea nel modo più fedele possibile, punto. Un solo compito, delicato, da fare bene. E così fa.

Worked exactly as advertised. I was nervous about getting a classic technics SL-1200 turntable to play on my Sonos system and this pre amp did the job, beautiful sound, loud and easy to install.

Excellent and cost effective way to put vinyl records back in your life if your amp does not have a turntable (phono) input. It simply pre amplifies the turntable output to the level suitable for any line level (cd, dvd, tuner, etc) source. Has a binding post for the earthing lead some turntables require (ie my 32 yr old dual CS505). Sound quality is fine and exactly what I remember from using the turntable through previous amplifiers. It also works well with my new Rega turntable. Thoroughly recommended! PS only suitably for moving magnet, (MM), cartridges, which is what all budget to £1000 turntables are supplied with. You would expect to use something far more esoteric if you had a moving coil cartridge anyway.
