I not only work with children with this condition, but my own, as well. My daughter is doing AMAZING using her brave voice. She's 3.5 years and her condition recently developed during her first year (this year) in preschool. She was always a timid temperament with people, but it really wasn't to the degree of selective mutism until school started. Although, I know a lot about anxiety disorders and cognitive-behavioral therapy, this book spells it out so very simply and has helped me, as well as my clients better understand how we may be (or others may be) unintentionally reinforcing the mutism. I am working on educating the schools on this condition and getting the children I work with appropriate behavior plans, as well as services and accommodations in the school setting. This book is an amazing resource.
