Basically, I have to tell you a little about myself, first. I have had a growing interest in comics for six months now. I have read a lot of Batman, Watchmen, and a little superman from DC. I've read a little bit of Fantastic Four, Iron Man, and X-Men from Marvel. I've also read plenty of assorted indie titles. I love Kirkman's Walking Dead, and Invincible, as well as Scott Pilgrim. This book, however was recommended by a friend of mine early on. It was my first Image Comics title. I must say, this is one of my favorite books. The characters, a plot that is fluid, but at the very end has a twist that nobody will see coming. The art is the icing on top of the cake.This trade collects the entire miniseries with no bonus content. It's a basic trade with a little thicker than normal glossy stock. The covor has a neat specular effect, where there are characters printed in gloss, so you can only see them when the light hits them right. It is a great value for a perfect story.The writing of Hill is wonderful. He does really great work developing all the featured characters through the plot, which is why the twist hits home so well. I also love the artwork. It's very neat and clean, yet messy in just the right way when action flares up.I want to thank Joe Hill for creating this masterpiece. His creative team's efforts show throughout. I have no higher recommendation for this work of art. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Very moving story about growing up and both the value and limits of fantasy *by M***L on Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2016* I didn't really know what to expect from this book going in, except that a friend had raved about it. It's about a middle-school aged girl who is a bit of a loner and only feels comfortable in her fantasies, particularly those where she battles enormous giants with a magical hammer. She struggles at school and while she makes a new friend, she also pushes that friend away with abrasive behavior. It's clear that some issue at home is bothering her, but it's not revealed what that is until fairly late in the book.The book is largely from her perspective and treats her fantasies as pretty real. A giant does indeed show up and the battle with it is depicted as quiet scary and epic. When it becomes clear why these fantasies are so powerful to the protagonist, it doesn't at all feel like a cheap twist but is very poignant and will likely have you in tears.The art, which is in grayscale (mostly black and while with some shading), is a bit offbeat, and I'm not sure how to describe the style, but I enjoyed it. The sense of design was very good, and the storytelling was clear.Image comics has really made its name with more sci-fi oriented stuff, but this is a great comic book with a fairly simple but deeply compassionate story. I remember loving the story when I read it then, and it was just as amazing the second time around. That being said, there are some pretty tough moments in this book. Barbara, the main character, is not particularly likeable. For me, that didn't hurt the story one bit. Some people might be put off by her attitude. I think it makes the other elements of the story more impactful.There are some fantasy elements in this book, although it is mostly set in the real world. Those fantasy portions connect more to imagination and escapism. They blend well with the rest of the story to the point that it becomes difficult to tell whether they are real or not. The other characters help round out Barbara's story, giving her support and opposition. Together these aspects create a powerfully emotional story.The art is great. It's in a manga style, which I don't always care for, but it works here. It ties right into Barbara's perspective.
