if using this kitchen culinary torch for marshmallow, will the butane leave bad taste/smell on the marshmallow?

Using a higher refined butane will eliminate that. A 7X refined would be the least I would get. The butane at stores, or in the little white cans, is often only refined 1 to 3 times. 
 
Personally, get at least an 11X refined. This eliminates any other aspects of the fuel and allows it to burn really clean. Thus, eliminating the bad taste. 
 
Also, maintain a further distance. (M)allow it to slowly melt down and then as it does, it will not be such a shock to the sugars. This helps eliminate both types of the "butane/chemical" flavorings. 
 
Another tip, if diet restrictions allow it, warm bacon grease. The slightest bit will amplify the refreshing flavors of a sweet item like Marshmallows. Also, it tends to give the mallow a unique bubly texture, while also crimping a nano-thin layer. (Best way to do bacon grease is to strain it very well. Then put it into a misting pump and get it to around 125f. Then do a light mist over the top of the marshmallow and thennn hit it with the torch. :)

Can you use any manufacturers butane canister?

It can use any manufacturers butane canister what has a metal ring around the top of it with about a 1/2" slit missing.(Canister with snap joint)
These fuel cans are the ones that fit portable gas stoves used in cooking, or camp stoves. You could find them at sporting goods stores, restaurant supply stores, any store selling camping gear. Or you could buy from the Amazon , like Gasone or Iwatani Butane Fuel Canister . The fuel canisters last a long time!

I am curious to know if anyone has actually received the 2 free butane cans that they promised.  Anyone?

It’s been several months now and still no butane. They’ve contacted me twice to “sign up to receive them” but no joy. (And, how would they know how to contact me if I hadn’t “signed up”?)

These cans are cheap & available at any hardware store.
