Cheap but effective.
I own a similar device that uses 240V across the terminals, and to be honest, it seems to catch very little. When it does there's a bit of a sizzle if you listen carefully, but that's it. Seeing a friend with a 2.8KV zapper that effective but twice the price of this, I decided to be twice as tight and get the cheaper but similarly specified item. Removing this from the box you have to be careful of the top black plastic corners, as the edges aren't very smooth. That and the slight angle of one of the grills shows you're buying a cheaper product. It does come with a small chain and cleaning brush, so you have everything you need. When on you get a nice bright purple glow, which I can only assume has a lot of U.V. in it too. At night white items fluoresce quite well. You can see it's on in bright daylight. There's a small switch on the front and once started it's like having a couple of mini light-sabres in the room. Leave it for a while and you'll soon hear a loud crack noise when anything succumbs to the U.V. goodness. Even the smallest gnat (of those that aren't vaporised) will make a mighty noise. Bluebottles go off with a bang. There's a small plastic tray underneath for disposal of said victims, but I'm too afraid to remove it with this unit on. It's that impressive. Not only does it zap insects to their component atoms, but it does it in great quantities. It really does attract the pests, so much so that I'm getting worried about the imbalance of the ecosystem.

Does a good job
Although this works well zapping all those pesky flies, the bulbs don't seem to last. We only need it during the spring & summer months and put it away after that but when we've brought it back out to do it's job again, the bulbs have always blown. Spares should be included. No reason for the bulbs to have blown when it's not been in use and carefully packed away. The crackling noise of the flies being zapped often makes us jump but it does the job and kills those flies. Absolutely no smell detected. The bulbs are bright, size is good but could look a little nicer.

Wear white!!!
Cut a long short. Lots of flies invaded my home to the point of buying the reviewed product. I so hoped that this would attract and kill them all. As I write this there is one crawling across my computer screen! I'm going to guess that there were 20 flies in my living room/kitchen at the start of the day. The goods were delivered at 6pm. Set up at 6:15 and turned ON! It would appear that British flies don't succumb to ultraviolet light. They were more interested with the TV screen. Even after turning that off I only got 3 'hits'. They were spectacular hits and I would recommend anyone with a fragile constitution to stand back. The 'crack' is pretty loud! One was obliterated to the point of not needing the fly mortuary as no body was found. Of the 20 flies in my living space, it has eliminated 3. On this basis the product is poor. However, the 3 that it nailed were probably just very unlucky but made a great noise. Upton more frecquent use, I find that this is an excellent product. The key is to leave it on at night with no other lights on. As long as the temperature is high enough the flies will seek the light and even warmth from the light. Superb in clearing a dark room from flies!

Dangerous
At first i gave this a 5 star award but i'm reducing that down to one but in all honesty wouldn't give it anything if i could. Let me tell you the comments in other reviews about making you jump & arking are very true but yesterday mine stopped working after 2 months, at first i thought it may be a blown fuse so i switched it off and unplugged it & because of other commitments i actually left it standing unplugged for 7hours, when i change the fuse i also went to clean it whilst it was still disconnected from any power at that time i also thought i would have a look at the light tubes just in case one of them had blown and actually got a bolt from one of them bad enough that i had to pay A&E a visit last night because my hand hurt that much i actually worried me. Thankfully im ok but to say the very least i wont be using that again.

Zap & the bugs are gone!
Having never owned or needed one of these before, I didn't know what to expect. Unfortunately the neighbours have bought chickens home recently and therefore, flies are regular visitors to the houses on our street now. I can't cope with even one or two buzzing about in my kitchen, but I opened the door the other night for ten minutes while I was sorting the recycling out & as I walked back in I was disgusted to find (literally) 50+ flies and moths in my home!... The thing itself was packed safe, but easy to open without tons of rubbish. It's really as simple to set up as just cutting a few cable ties off and finding a place to put it. Once placed, I sat in the other room doing some paperwork and in the first 20 minutes I heard it go off 3-4 times (ZAP - it's loud - but not actually that bad, it shouldn't really make a person jump)... What I hadn't realised, was that at this point the lights hadn't had chance to properly heat up or whatever, because a couple of hours later - it was really zapping away and though I haven't a picture to prove it, the next morning the bottom tray was full of flies. There's still a few buzzing about a few days later now - but at least 80% if a LOT of flies have gone and I'm confident the rest will soon be gone too. Unfortunately I don't have anywhere high up to place the freestanding zapper and I don't want it hanging on my wall with the tiny metal chain provided because I wouldn't trust it to not fall down and start a fire or something while I'm sleeping - but if you can find room to place this high up, top of the fridge or something?... You're into a winner as I think it would kill more insects when higher up. I can't fault it. It's smart, freestanding which is what I wanted, killed most of the flies within 1-2 nights and isn't forgiving. I would recommend this product.
