You can press the spring and the bristles will touch the bottom. **Q: Where is it made? There is no description on this page at all.** A: Although I believe it's from Japan, it doesn't work very well compared to a Chinese model. The plastic bristles drip oil. The Chinese model uses a more absorbent material. I threw this away after first use. **Q: Max temperature? I pre-heat outdoor grill to 600F for steaks.** A: I have used it in my grill once with no issues. It’s silicone, so can handle high heat. I applied oil before the grill was that hot, though. I didn’t like that the bristles got dirty from the grill, I had to wash the brush thoroughly before putting it back in the bottle. I usually just use it for brushing pans or clean veggies like potatoes before putting them on the grill now. **Q: Can it go in microwave to soften butter?** A: The bowl is glass so I’m assuming you can put it in the microwave. Butter doesn’t have to be very hot to melt. The top is plastic, so I wouldn’t put it in it. The brush seems like silicone so it can take the heat of melted butter. I would not screw the lid down on the hot glass.
