This camera DOES NOT use dual pixel AF or any other phase detect AF system in it. Manage your autofocus expectations accordingly. Especially in low light and in video. However, it does have a noticeable improvement in speed over its predecessor and for most situations it's fine. What this camera excels at, just like its predecessor, is stills. It has excellent low and mid ISO image quality. I prefer the Fine Detail setting as my picture style as it provide excellent sharpness and punchy, great-looking colors by default. But there are a number of other picture styles to suit your tastes. I also love that this camera now has in camera raw processing, which can be useful.It seems also like Canon has quietly made some improvements to the lens because it seems a bit sharper than the one on the G7X even though they are supposed to be the same. Video quality is also excellent and quite sharp. The autofocus is pretty good but because it's contrast detect, you will see a little bit of back and forth motion with the focus from time but otherwise it's not bad. Great for casual uses such as vlogging. The camera controls are well laid-out. I like the chunkier grip and that the exposure comp dial has better feedback to it. The one its predecessor could be a little hard to turn (but kudos to Canon for at least including one - Sony RX100 has no such dial on top). The LCD is bright and clear and also is more flexible, which means it's a lot easier to compose on in bright sunlight. Battery life is not stellar but once again, this also an improvement over the original G7X. It should last you a day of shooting. Complaints? I think the major one is, and this seems to be an issue on both the G7X and the RX100 series cameras, is that dust can easily get inside the lens. Even though the camera has a built-in automatic lens cap, it does a poor job at keeping dust and other particles out. I would recommend getting a secondary lens cap which can run anywhere from $5-$15 at the big NYC camera retailers or here on desertcart. I also think the noise reduction in the JPEGS is a little heavy-handed by default. You should turn this down to low. But overall, a great enthusiast compact camera. Luckily it was easy to prize off the bezel and find the screws holding the screen module to the brackets. Only 4 tiny screws secure the screen to the bracket and another 4 screws hold the bracket to the plastic casing when there should be 6. I used some rapid set plastic glue to fill the void around the broken plastic screw point and added the needed extra small screws to fit the bracket correctly to the plastic case. If desertcart hadn't put the package box inside another larger box with their complimentary brown toilet roll allowing it to roll around, it probably would not have suffered this damage during transit!... I also decided to buy an UPS because in the case of a power outage I still want my security cameras to run. I then got myself 8 security camera junction boxes(on desertcart), some 1/2 in conduit and connectors and a main junction box to run all the conduit to. I then drilled an 1 inch hole in the back of the junction box picked where I wanted all the wires to go into my basement and drilled about a 1 inch hole from the outside of my house to inside my basement. It’s taking me about an hour and a half to about two hours per camera after I got the main junction box, server rack and NVR all set up. That means installing the camera junction boxes where I want the camera, running the cat6 through the conduit, tipping the cat6 cable to connect to the camera through the junction boxes and to the patch panel on my sever rack, hanging the conduit and running it to the main junction box and finally installing the cameras onto the little junction boxes. It is a chore but again for the ability to access the cameras through multiple means instantly is worth it. The quality of the cameras is great especially during the day and the night vision works well in dark areas at night. If any areas are lite at night or cars drive by, I recommend turning the IR lights off but keeping it on auto day and night. That will eliminate the night vision but will record in black and white, which if there is a street light for example on, then the quality will be fine. Otherwise you might get some unwanted glare during night time in those areas. You have the ability to connect the NVR via HDMI to a monitor or computer and can access the cameras and setting right there. You can also get access to the stream anywhere with the app. You will need to creat a log in on the NVR first or use the Admin login information to be able to initially view your cameras but after the first time you won’t need to log in again. And finally you can also access your cameras anywhere on your local network by just web browsing the IP address of the NVR. All of these means of viewing the video stream are instantaneous and light years more reliable then any wireless camera on the market. Even if you don’t want to install the cameras yourself, you can hire a company to run the wires for you. Just tell them you already bought the security system. You’ll probably spend close to 1,000$ I’m sure. Especially if you have 8 cameras to run wires for bit your already about to drop 800$ on the security system itself, just saying. Overall great product so far. Absolutely recommend, especially if you have some sort of general understanding of running Ethernet or wiring in general. We currently have 11 cameras online, including 1 to watch the nearby field and treeline for wildlife. Well, I tried them out, and now I use these binoculars for almost all my birding. The big, beautiful images of birds that I see when using these binoculars makes them irresistible. They are a bit heavier, of course, but not much heavier than, say 8x42s, and they are very well-balanced in the hand, so the slight additional 'holding tremor' doesn't bother me much at all. Sustained viewing is relatively easy for me, and no, I am neither huge nor built like a weight-lifter. Sharpness, clarity, color and flatness of field are all terrific -- you would have to really scratch around with minor details to say how a pair of Swarovskis (where I can make direct real-life comparisons) is much better. Internal reflections are well-controlled, although a little bit of flare can appear in some high contrast conditions. The focus control is very smooth and definite, which you really need on 12x50s because the depth of field of focus is narrower than on 8x42s. I have found I have adapted quickly to focusing a bit more, so it's not a big issue for me. The field of view is of course narrower than x8s, but I have not really noticed this much, even when searching for small birds in foliage. And when you do see the bird, the image is much larger, so you have a better image and a better chance of identifying it. Low light viewing is good. One last thing: the difference between x8 and x12 is that the *linear* image is x1.5 larger on the x12, but it is over x2 larger in *area* terms, so the visual impression looking through x12s is startlingly different -- the images seem huge in comparison. I love this. Some other lesser but still important issues. Lens caps are great. Eye relief is good, and the twist-out eyecups are fine. It is true that if your eyes are very close together you might have a problem with these binoculars. My eyes are quite close together, but these binoculars are fine -- the barrels can still move closer at my setting. I have to wonder if the problems other readers were having occurred in this area might have occurred because they did not move the rubber retaining rings of the objective covers further towards the middle of the barrel. If you don't do this, then the rubber rings bump into each other at the fat ends of the barrels and stop the binoculars from being brought together by a significant amount. At first I thought I would have to send the binoculars back because I did not notice this, but I looked at the rings, moved them up, and of course it was fine. The whole deal comes with a good case and strap, and with that Athlon warranty. In case you can't guess from all of this, I am very, very, very happy with these binoculars. A further note: I already have a pair of 8x42 Athlon Midas binoculars, and they are superb for their price range, as my review will show here on desertcart. I was looking for a mid- level pair of binoculars as an upgrade to my cheap but surprisingly satisfying entry level Lululo binoculars, for which I made a product review a few days ago. When this pair came, I was not disappointed- the optics were to my liking- wide field of view , and crystal- clear; the size was perfect for my grip and quite light and portable ; and the price was appropriate for a brand touting to be of the Zeiss family. It came with a very beautiful protective hard case and over- the - top harness strap. This is a keeper and I would probably not replace it with the heavier, costlier ones I was initially tempted to buy. These are everything you need in a binocular - I’m the type that browses back and forth between products before I choose because I want to be sure what I buy will meet my expectations, has good longevity and lastly, good value. I mostly use bins for birding, beach trips, the Zoo, and some hunting in the Northwest. I tried out many bins at retail stores over the last few months, as well as reading about each one I had interest in. Once I felt like I had gathered enough info I narrowed it down to these Athlon 8x42 or the Vortex Viper 8x42. I wanted something compact, crystal clear, and powerful enough for most of my outdoor needs. I want to note that Athlon and Vortex have very similar warranties, materials, and are both made in China. I went ahead and purchased the Athlon 8x42 after not really being impressed with the Vortex Viper 8x42. I have to tell you they are every bit as clear and then some compared to 500.00 to 800.00 bins from Vortex, Leupold and a number of other brands. They exceeded the quality of the Vortex viper 8x42 I compared them too for almost half the price. I also felt these were a closer match clarity wise to the vortex Razor 8x42. You can clearly see with good detail at 500 yards in open space. You can use these with very little outdoor light too. Magnification wise if you need to see any further than 500 yards you’d be better going with the 10x42 or 10x50. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend these over the two brands above, and am very happy with the value for the dollar. I also purchased Athlon’s Ares 15x45x65 spotting scope. It too has the same clarity and quality along with some excellent features and cool extras you can add to it for shooting or sighting in your rifle at longer distances. After doing as much research as I could pre-purchase I concluded that these Athlon Midas binoculars were the equivalent, at least on paper, of other considerably more expensive binoculars such as Vortex Viper HDs. I also concluded that even though these Athlon Midas’ are listed as the number three tier binocular in Athlon’s lineup (Athlon Cronus is the top tier followed by Athlon Ares) that in every way that really mattered to me (BAK4 roof prisms, phase shift corrected, ED glass) these Athlon Midas’ would provide the same practical performance as the more expensive top tier Athlon Cronus. All of this and finding a pair of Athlon Midas binoculars at the bargain price of $225, along with just a couple of favorable reviews, and noting the lifetime warranty, encouraged me to take the leap. Once in hand the Athlon Midas’ binoculars appear to be very well built and rugged. I checked for common binocular issues, such as collimation, and found no problems. I did some experimenting looking at trees and house roofs down the street from me on a snowy day both at midday and later as dusk set in. I could not detect the presence of any chromatic abberation (which I would expect to show up when there is snow as part of the image). So all good there. I only have a rather cheap pair of binoculars to compare these too, but the difference with the Athlon Midas binoculars is striking. They are very bright and clear. The resolution of the image is very sharp. Color reproduction seems excellent. No evidence of the contrast washing out as happens with cheaper binoculars. All in all these binoculars seem to be a spectacular bargain. Athlon seems to be an up and coming company in the optics world. They make rifle scopes, spotting scopes, and rangefinders in addition to binoculars. When it starts to rain u can quickly place them back over to prevent any water hitting an ruining the back lens .when you first try too individualise the focus , it really comes in handy having the front lens caps attatched , just place the right lens cap over the right lens this allows full control over your binos look through at something about 60 / 100 yards away and use the focus wheel at the centre to get the best clear sharp views u can , when u have achieved this let it alone then remove the right cap , and place the left cap over the left lens , look at the same or roughly the same spot , but this time use the dioptic wheel on the right lens to focus this eye when you have achevied perfect sharp clear image stop remove lens cap and enjoy the new world binos offer , you won't have to touch the focus wheels again now , well unless some little sod lol changes them too suit their 👀 both sets off caps fit reassuringly well to the binoculars, not so tight they are a pain to get off . but provide a good reassuring grab that they won't just fall off , the case they come in is a soft shell case imho well built too im happy with the quality of the case , would recommend these binos happy i got them , but i did get mine for 59 pound over the christmas season deals , if you buy these from desertcart you can send them back no quibble at no fuss from one off there many many drop off places. , which makes trying these at 120.00 risk free imo the build is there the quality sharp view is there , the excellent magnification is there also the fantastic little detail touches that make these an absolute pleasure to use / utilise , i didnt find the weight heavy too have around neck or in the hand for any extended time great buy for me 😃\nReview: Great Quality, Good Image Sharpness, Fabulous Price - I ordered these binoculars for my wife as since retiring, we have recently returned to birdwatching.
